Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.In the US we try to separate religious beliefs, which are protected by the First Amendment, from some religious practices, such as polygamy, which are not. I presume wife beating and FGM fall into this latter category. But as Dr. Warner has said, there are some Sharia apologists who will try to blur the line between faith and practice. One tactic I’ve seen in this regard is to try to characterize Sharia as an “alternative” rule of law to which people should have a right to subscribe voluntarily. Now, certainly one can voluntarily agree in advance to, say, arbitrate a contract dispute. But I’m not sure how one can voluntarily agree to being beaten or maimed. Sharia’s treatment of women is particularly primitive. Should any civilized society allow such treatment? I would have difficulty continuing to call such a society civilized.
Perhaps another way to phrase it would be, do we require a Christian baker to bake an LGBTQ cake, while we allow a Muslim husband to beat his wife and mutilate his child?
