This makes it sound like the military is just now preparing for a pandemic. The Geographic Combattant Commands, including USNORTHCOM( (responsible for Canada, US,,VI, PR, and Mexico) has CONPLANs for this and tons of other contingencies (like mass migration, etc...). Their supporting component commands (AFNORTH, ARNORTH, MARNORTH, etc) also have their supporting plans. All of these plans are reviewed on a regularly scheduled basis and revised/improved based upon new understanding/technology. They are also exercised at different times to ensure rapid deployment of highly trained professionals and capability availability. They usually foresee the orders to deploy long before the orders arrive and therefore they are ready to go when needed.

The numbers reported that all of a sudden had an enormous spike are more than likely due to administrative inconsistencies and not due to an actual sudden increase in the number of cases. Furthermore, almost every one of the increased confirmed cases were in mainland China where we have no control on how the numbers are being reported.

Although I have repeatedly stressed that it is far too soon to make predictions or any definitive analysis, we can see that less than 600 cases have been confirmed in the world outside of mainland China. At this point we have had 15 cases confirmed in the US and 20% of them have recovered. There have been no deaths to date from this virus in the US. There have only been 3 deaths in the world outside of mainland China. We won’t be able to make any predictions for at least 2 more weeks and likely not even before a month. However, it APPEARS that the protocols that were put in place weeks ago have been, thus far, successful in containing the uncontrolled spread of the virus. Only time will tell, but it makes sense not to take unnecessary risks in the meantime.
