When I say most, I mean like 80%; that was in Computer Science a couple decades ago but it's probably still about the same.
It's not just a technical gap, either. We have a huge shortage of people to fill trade jobs. There are lots of jobs, millions from what I've heard, that are simply going un-filled... as kids line up to get useless liberal arts degrees that don't lead to any viable career options.
I know of at least some areas that are trying and trying to grow, but developers can't put the crews together fast enough.
That does mean that the trade jobs are paying pretty well, though; which should begin to attract new workers if we can drag them away from their major in intersectionality with focus on white-men-are-evil.

By divesting from public universities, we've created an incentive for universities to cater to foreign students, who pay the full tuition. And by divesting from the public sector, there are less jobs for liberal arts grads. Moreover, by deregulating and union busting, there is little incentive for companies to raise wages.

@WilyRickWiles I don't know if more intervention is the right answer... I'm sure there are things we should stop doing. The market has its own incentives without artificially inducing them; all that does is muck it up. Bureaucrats with clipboards are simply incapable of moving at the speed of what they call the "invisible hand", and the sheer combinatorics are not even conceivable let alone micromanageable with anything approaching efficiency; or even functionality.
You don't make a clock more accurate by trying to turn the gears manually; it only works right when you leave it alone. That's how I see the mostly-free market.
Trade jobs are paying up around $80,000 plus... their incentive for higher wages is greater demand, and they have that right now. If a job has no incentive for higher wages, then the market doesn't need more people in that job right now.
...something to consider before choosing a degree program.
@rway Public goods aren't profitable on the timeframe that the market expects, at least not without some sort of indentured servitude.

@WilyRickWiles Public goods should probably just be considered "overhead" expenses, with no expectation of profit. Now, the trick is to keep a lid on what is considered a "public good"; see: Pandora's Box.
That's why everybody tries to get that "Seal of endorsement", so they can be released from market realities and simply rake in profits with no accountability, and pass the steadily-increasing cost of that institutionalized incompetence on to the taxpayer who has no choice but to just pay up.
For example, public schools and institutions of what we used to call "higher learning"; the 1990's-2000's housing market is another example.
This is where we get the sales pitch: "healthcare is a human right!!"; emphatically... almost hysterically; there's trillions of dollars in-play if they can get that Free-Pass stamped...
Man, if they can just get that to stick, they'll be able to charge anything they want, with no accountability for anything; and they'll be folk heroes just for trying... what a deal.
