Whatever the argument for temporary gain of leverage by coalescing in numbers against a large corporation, two things always remain true.

It is in the best interests of EVERY corporation to reward performance. And unions assume fair compensation will not happen unless forced. That is not even close to being logical or universally true, and the assumption causes corporations to protect themselves by ceasing rewarding performance. That diminishes their competitiveness in the marketplace, and reduces their chances of staying in business. So are those who don't perform looking for undeserved compensation?
No matter how successful unions are in the short term, corporations must make a profit, and when they fail to make a profit, if they can't hold wages down, they will either cut jobs or go out of business. That means ALL unions are a TEMPORARY force to unbalance natural market forces of free commerce. Even if successful for a while, the effect of a "successful" union is either destroy jobs or artificially increase the cost of living in that local economy and nullify wage gains.
