Something I have noticed is there are thousands of members here but everyone seems to have different interests. There is so much information and it is so easy to access that you can spend all your time on your individual obsession.
I think the book "Future Shock" by Alvin Toffler has come up before in threads. He was concerned that people would be overwhelmed by information before the Internet. I would say that it has not come to pass. People just seem to be filtering out what they are not interested in. Now people are concerned that the "information age" is reinforcing cognitive bias. I'm not so sure it really matters how much information is available. People have pretty much always believed what they wanted to believe. What they were vested in believing.
This phenomenon seems for the most part to be independent of intelligence. I know really intelligent religious people and some pretty stupid atheists. Some really intelligent republicans and some that are not particularly bright. Same is true for any belief. Humans are apparently innately prejudiced. So much so that it must serve some biological function. Fitness and group selection are obviously linked but does that require "group think". Why do people feel such a strong desire to justify their group.
It certainly must be the case that individual identity is relative to what is not us. We are defined by what we are not. Born in a social vacuum we would have no frame of reference to define what we are not.
Life is about fitness. As it turns out Freud was right. It's all about sex for a sexually reproducing species.
If the culture war is really about largely genetically determined personality traits then the question is which group has the highest fitness.
No logic besides the logic of fitness need apply. That would make the Nazis right but they certainly didn't win the fitness game. That leaves us with the probability that groups that cooperate with groups will be the winners.
Who is the most cooperative group with other groups in the culture war? Not theoretically or dogmatically but actually.

What happens here is only relevant to how we assess information. You wouldn't expect that the IDW be actively engaged in the culture war as it's representative personalities are focused on open dialogue.
My question is about those activity engaged in the culture war and their ability to form coalitions.
The flood of information that technology has enabled allows an almost instantaneous revaluation of what hierarchies have value and which do not. A process that took centuries in the past can now happen within a 24 news cycle. As a species we have not developed the "rules" we need to incorporate that phenomena into our lives - neither personally or societally.
Classically, your position in a personally valued hierarchy, determined your internal self worth. Supported by a the relatively common societal valuation of that specific hierarchy, your personal valuation was pretty much the same as that of others. That is no longer the case. It comes down to how can I trust anyone?
The truth is - you can't trust anyone until you know them; you must know their relative valuation of not only your personal position in an hierarchy but their valuation of that hierarchy. That's why we selectively absorb information and develop our truths. Cognitive dissonance is not a problem as long as the value of the associated hierarchies are constantly changing.
Humans are an adaptive species. We will either incorporate this new paradigm or die trying.
In the meantime...
Trust no one
Question everything
Tell the truth
and above all else, Follow the Money

If the information we receive causes us to constantly reevaluate our position within the hierarchy that would seem to support Toffler's theory that we should all be going around in a state of "shock" from constant change?
