In a conversation I was having the topic of censorship and propaganda during WWII came up. Following the war there was the red scare and McCarthyism. You also had the culture at the FBI that promoted political blackmail through spying on private citizens. In that mix you can see the seeds for the self censorship that we are acculturerated to accept today. I think this is something worth discussing.

Turned out that The House Committee on Un American Activities and Joseph McCarthy were correct. While going through their archives after the collapse of the Soviet Union it was discovered that there were in fact Communist and Communist sympathizers occupying high level positions within the US Federal Gov't.
Also it is no secret really that "Hollywood" - actors, writers, producers etc were closeted Communists and or Communist sympathizers.
Joe McCarthy even today is regarded as an over zealous clown. A man who conducted a "witch hunt" and who was just a dull bitter man.
We all have heard the line "the devils neatest trick is convincing us that he doesn't exist" - well the same thought applies to Communism.
The neatest trick is how the giant and amazingly efficient propaganda machine (its working parts are Hollywood, Journalism) has successfully turned the word "communism" into a sort of caracature of itself. Almost everyone thinks of Communism in the abstract. They fail to see it for the prescient, the very real threat it is to the health and prosperity, the well being of every living person.
Communism, in other words, is much more than a mere abstraction. It is much more dangerous and harmful than most folks know and it is raising its ugly head once again. This time it is rising up on U S Soil.

Absolutely, however my point is that cancers grow in the dark until it's to late to cure them. The point of free speech is to be a kind of chemotherapy that while it will almost always make the patient sick it may save them.
Communism is definitely a cancer. I won't cover that here. My only concern here is with the culture of self censorship. Censorship can be self defeating if people of moderation become frightened that punishment exceeds the crime. Most people came to the conclusion rightfully or wrongly that McCarthy went too far. Out of fear that the cure was worse than the disease the cancer was allowed to spread. A better tactic would have been public ridicule. That is why the left hates memes.
@wolfhnd As outgoing as I am, as prolific a writer, I engage in self-censorship daily for several reasons: 1) to protect my family from 'association' hatred; 2) to limit the damage a serious response could cause - assuming it provoked hate rather than discussion - something that happens all too frequently from the tolerant opposition; 3) I like my ass, I don't like things biting it - so I temper my expressed thoughts by considering how malignant opposition might take it; 4) my knee-jerk reaction is seldom well considered.
Note only the last one relates to the content of my speech, everything else is protection from OTHERS. And that is the goal of 'terrorists', whether the blowing up building kind, or the SJW conformists.
