The whole series is worth a look; it didn't teach just reading and writing, but even manners, morals, and ethics. It was one of the most widely used school texts in the country for generations, providing, for many, at least some degree of noble sentiment.

If you look at the suggested books and how to analyze them at each stage you see the manners , morals and ethics. especially very last section.
@DesireNoDesires I would have so failed this work, probably even now, and I've had college comp and reading for comprehension and retention.
@govols I wonder what types of literature today's teachers are using
@DesireNoDesires I'm certain there isn't much from ancient lit, especially as it might be time-framed with context via simultaneous forays into period appropriate history and social studies, or we wouldn't have so many who think of our forebears as ignorant and dim.
