Worlds Most spoken Languages (2019)
The video ranks the 60 most spoken languages by the number of native/first-language speakers as well as their language family.
Note:
- It’s difficult to define exactly what constitutes a language and what a dialect.
- Some languages (e. g. Chinese and Arabic) are sometimes considered single languages and sometimes language families.
- just first language speakers are counted
- Many countries (mainly French or English speaking ones) are not marked, because they are just speaking the language as second or third, but grow up with another.
- The maps are only showing the roughly Area were the native speakers are mainly from.

The only surprise I had in the top 3 was the fact that even after Chinese had been broken into so many languages (not just dialects) Mandarin Chinese alone still had more than twice the native speakers English and almost twice the number of Spanish.
I understand this is only the native speakers (not foreign language speakers). I would be interested to find out how the numbers shift when you include all speakers of the top 10 languages. I believe English and French would both take significant jumps, as well as Spanish in recent decades.
