In old growth forest where there is a carpet of dead plant and tree leaves have fungus growing in them that produce large amounts of CO2 that cancel out the O2 produced by trees making them one of the worst producers of O2. Marine plant life is where most of the O2 produced by plants comes from, followed by non woody plants, then trees.

Trees also filters the air of other chemicals in the air and are valuable for that reason. Not mentioning their role as regulators of moisture and temperature in forests (many modern cities are now forests). And of course they provide food and a habitat for many species of creatures.
It is actually important that trees release some of the carbon back into the atmosphere else they would have stripped the air of live giving CO2 long ago.
And @Hanno fungi filter vast amounts of heavy metals from the atmosphere, just as a bonus
