Sam and Jordan and Bret delved into the (im)morality of slavery. All agree that the very idea is abhorrent. The conversation about ancient texts and how they propose moral frameworks through within which slaves might enjoy a certain level of autonomy and dignity is really a pile of crap. The ancient texts don't so much condone slavery and prescribe terms for their just treatment, but instead assume that slavery is a nominally normal condition that lots of individuals will find themselves subjected to in any given society.

At present, in the US, about 70% of the population are wage-slaves, without enough surplus reserved wealth to fund a $1,000 emergency expense. They are "at risk" for utter impoverishment in the "richest country in the world" if they so much as TWEET from an unpopular perspective. The servile class doesn't "live" life, but, rather, endures is. The ancient texts are the documented manners by which various ruling regimes attempted to instill a minimum standard through which cultural concern is granted to those least able to successfully manage their own well-being. They weren't saying that slavery or poverty is good, but, instead, that it will inevitably exist. The ancient texts are preserved because they managed to enunciate perspectives that were then currently functional efforts at dealing with justice in an utterly unjust reality. They're attempting to pass along moral traditions for dealing with an unjust reality caused by an irrevocable inequality among and between populations of human animals.

The ancient texts are attempts to document traditions, and to provide guidance to subsequent generations on what worked and what failed. Most of what I've explored of the texts from antiquity doesn't glorify the status quo, but instead works to reveal the weaknesses.

The poor will always be among us. How many ways can we fuck up our efforts not to deal with them, but instead to deal with the fact. Whenever you read the texts from the past, don't read as though it's a prescription for what ought to be, but instead read as if it's trying to document what was wrong and right given the nature of the time and place.

I really hope that current generations will be judged as harshly by future generations, for our attitude towards poverty and the homeless, as our generation judges the slave owners and their enablers of past generations.

Yet the poor and homeless will remain among them. Always.

@govols Just as the ancient texts assume slavery to be an inescapable part of a developed civilization at that time, we assume poverty and homelessness to be an inescapable part of our societies. Even though we have the resources to feed and house everyone. I don't know if we will ever get beyond that but I really hope some day people will say "in the 21st century people walked past fellow humans sleeping on the streets, in rags, eating garbage, and did nothing about it" and find that incompatible with what they consider to be basic human decency.

Hello govols, Crikey,

The distribution of wealth is very tricky, no?

Providing equal opportunity can not result in equal outcomes among humans. And the very WORST thing is governments who destroy the rights of their people to do so.

I'm not reading a wiki without a perspective into why I should.

@govols According to a Walk Free Foundation report in 2016, there were 46 million people enslaved worldwide in 2016, there were 18.3 million people in India living in the forms of modern slavery, such as bonded labour, child labour, forced marriage, human trafficking, forced begging, among others
