For the first half-hour to forty-five minutes after The Titanic struck the iceberg, there were few outward signs that disaster had already descended. Passengers dressed up for a stroll on the decks while they awaited word that all was back to normal. There was a festive mood in the chilled North Atlantic evening.
Right now, we receive daily updates on the progress our “president-elect” is making towards putting together his administration. We hear about cabinet choices, foreign policy initiatives, foreign leaders relieved to be free of the domineering Trump. The attitude is upbeat, even festive.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has yet to resign her Senate seat; Biden is denied access to Pentagon briefings; Arizona has officially become undecided again; Chris Wallace tries, and fails, to force a guest to call Biden the President-Elect; state legislatures are refusing to follow the narrative and are holding hearings, even pushing back against the rush to judgement certifying their state’s election results; Michael Flynn’s case is finally dismissed; and still out there on the horizon, five Supreme Court justices who believe the Constitution is sacred. True, Alito dismissed the PA appeal, but only because Texas’ action (now with seven additional states joining in) rolls up the same issue with much wider scope.
And yet to be acknowledged at all is the required report from DNI Ratcliffe regarding foreign influence in the election. His op-ed this week identifying China as the greatest threat to freedom and democracy since WWII might give pause to those who have benefitted from surreptitious deals, and who found themselves blackmailed into cooperation with the CCP instead.
It’s possible that when President Trump replaced the top echelon of the DoD with special forces loyalists, he may have just been killing time because he had nothing else on his plate, given the rapidly approaching end of his administration. Possible. But like Biden’s win, the odds are against it. In Georgia, Trump looked back at the gaggle of media whores and told them, “You might not be so happy in a few weeks.” Of course, no one took him seriously. At least not publicly. But I think many are pausing their celebrations to notice a peculiar tilt to the decks. Pretty soon, they’ll be scrambling for the lifeboats. And there won’t be any.
