Something just crossed my mind that is a bit frightening. I participated in many forums in the past but this is the last one still standing. How many of you have had a similar experience? I started using "forums" back in 1994 when the internet was a baby, as far as I know none of those made it into the late 2000s. For reference the first bulletin board service was created in 1973. I didn't have access to the internet until 1977 and that was through college and very limited and not again until my office had personal computers in maybe 1992. When did you first use forums?

Only been part of three forums the first was FB in 96 the next You Tube don't have a feed but do watch DIY and Music, and this one to find alternate views. Still on a phone connect as all other forms of data in my area are slower 15Mbs satellite was at 5, and no cell reception. My first was commodore 64 and a second hand leading edge model d stile have the LE and am in the proses of putting an old Seagate 15 MB drive in it. the drive has a label that says dos, win 3.1. and Kcad not sure it will work on the 8bit machine I do have other drives that I can use if it won't read it.

1999 I signed up on a message board at the tail end of a flame war between 2 boards, got mistaken for the enemy and suddenly found myself chewing out people left right and center. Ended up as a moderator there and joined a flame board made up of posters from both those boards and a mod there as well. amazing what you can tread in when you don't look.

I started using the internet in 94 with my 2400 baud modem and a combination of AOL, newsgroups, and local BBSes. By mid 94 I ran my own BBS and joined the ‘local’ bbs network to give my users an internet enabled email. I marvel out how much tech has changed but I worry that has become more centralized and not de-centralized. I could never have dreamed about the level of censorship and access restriction that we now see on content/speech.

got my first computer in early '90s. Taught myself DOS - discovered Bulletin Boards at that time. Joined 3 or 4 of them. Eventually became a Windows user and moved away from local BBs and joined America Online and CompUSA.

@Haraldson I borrowed a friend's C64 to study 6502 coding so I could test out of a microprocessor course and finish my degree sooner.

@Haraldson Gary Kildall would not answer IBM's phone calls , IBM chose Gates and his boys, and CP/M was never heard from again. WORD STAR got murdered early. My xt clone came with word star preinstalled. Word Perfect 4.2 was awesome. Lotus announced the decision not to support windows 3.1. A year later nobody cared what Lotus was doing.

@cepstralspike yeah I loved Word Perfect. Very intuitive - so easy to learn. I took a college class that offered beginning Word Perfect and Paradox DB and can't remember the name of their spreadsheet program. LOVED that class. Learned a lot that carried me forward after MS Office suite came along.

@iThink I remember being amazed at Word Perfect print preview. I never went back to wordstar. I think I still have my okidata 192 dot matrix printer somewhere.

@cepstralspike I was amazed with the print preview feature...wow - such forward thinking there.

I was a member of the huge [at the time] Richard Dawkins forum, until he decided to pull the plug on it. Some of those members then shifted over to another forum called " Talk Freethought." But it has never achieved anywhere near the numbers of the former forum. Plus, most of it's members are far leftists, which I finally deserted recently after 20K posts because of it.

Dawkins was still railing against the Spanish Inquisition after atheistic communism killed more people every day of the 20th century than the inquisition did during its entire existence.

Hmmm.... thinking back now I guess I share the experience.
Most of them folded over the years, one was taken over by Progressives and died another was moderated to death due to Progressive concerns and others banned anyone who didn't agree with the LW Progressives that ran them.

Usenet in 1987/88. BBSs starting in 1984/5. Various ISP portal forums into the 90s.

So, this forum started on another platform? Which one? How many platforms has it traversed?

I knew that was going to happen. Sorry I didn't make it clear I joined this one when all the old farts like me got the last of my old haunts closed due to our politically incorrect attitudes.

@wolfhnd I don't think parler is coming back. Telegram is fast but weird (I'm getting used to it). Gab is slow but easier to acclimate to. Can't get my mind around Minds. Can't embrace Mewe with much trust, but we'll see.

@cepstralspike, I am beginning to think you are right about the total demise of Parler, despite what Dan Bongino. And Matt Gaetz (owners) are saying. Maybe in 2 or more years they will. MeWe is hmmmm...I just can't seem to embrace it either. Like Gab, but they are a tad slow. I am going to check out Telegram and Minds.

@DeplorableToo I forgot to mention these guys. They're not bad [clouthub.com]

@cepstralspike, thanks!
