Hello parsifal, I don't see virtue-signalling tbh. Like I said, product branding and changing product image are common business strategies. Businesses do this all the time. They try to cash in on anything and everything that is trendy, if not creating trends by themselves, and that includes political trends, too. If gender is a hot topic, as it currently is, they see a golden business opportunity in it. That is why "business ethics" is an oxymoron. Call me cynical!

I had asked why. Saying businesses do it all the time doesn’t answer the question. Why, for example, a recognized symbol of a quality product that has been around for eight or ten decades now all of a sudden needs ‘modernizing’...has the product changed? Likely it has over the years. Un heralded and unnoticed. Was the family of the original Aunt Jemima demanding negotiations for using the image? No. So why (again) would any business incur even the simple monetary cost of creating a new image, changing the ‘old’ artwork and labels for the ‘new’, and all the advertising and product hype - just to be trendy?

@parsifal "Just to be trendy" you say, and yes, trend analysis is very important for all businesses along with marketing strategies; branding, creating good images, the timing of announcing new products, changes, establishing good reputations. etc., etc., and all these things lead to profits.
If you want precise answers to your why question, you'll have to find "insiders"! Lol
I think that when there is a person who politicises something and uses that politicisation as a weapon to get what they wat, there is also a person who objects to that politicisation and uses that objection as a weapon to get what they want. So, it goes round and round in circles.
