It's complicated, see my reply below.

For years I’ve heard that it is impossible to be a democrat and a Christian. I have vehemently argued against that premise for almost all of this time. I have tried to argue that I have some Christian friends that are Democrats and it’s only the democrat leadership that is evil and chooses their ideology over a love for God and those He created. They’re just against the harshness of some of us conservatives. (Personal responsibility: If I can do it, you can too).

Then I watched as the democrat platform changed to one that openly stated, “the democrat party has no place for God, He’s not welcome here”. And still, those ‘Christian democrat friends’ held tightly to the democrat party. Some of these ‘Christian democrat friends’ have spent decades in the military and had some semblance of honor in their lives. I thought, surely there will be an objection from the Christians within the party and a mass exodus if the party leadership refuses to listen. I was wrong.

Slowly I moved to a perspective that they can still be true Christians, just ignorant ones. They must not understand the evils of the democrat party and they just want everybody to be kind and gentle with each other and they’re willing to overlook the obvious lies and evil done by their party. They just can’t see a better way. I watched them try to justify the murder of hundreds of millions of babies and thought, “they’ve accepted the obvious lie that it is not a real baby and it’s just a matter of choice” (not the choice of the one being murdered, but the choice of the one wanting to commit the murder).

For years, any time my democrat friends needed something, I was there to help. I sought ways of making their lives better. With my closest friend/neighbor, I went to his 50th anniversary party held at his Catholic Church and heard the priest say how wonderful a Christian couple they were. There are a few in our neighborhood like this. Some are just elderly people in need of help, so I help. Others are people with whom I share my life and have trusted and treated like close family members.

When the cat 5 hurricane wiped out the city and the entire county, I saw it as a Christian responsibility to reach out to my neighbors and help where I could. I live in a neighborhood with over 50% military or military retirees and thought I would ensure they were OK and if so I would enlist their help to help those in greater need. (Nobody was badly hurt or killed). I was surprised to see that those conservative military retirees I had spent little time getting to know were the most willing to help me organize support for others in need. I wasn’t surprised to see that the majority of those in need were liberals/democrats. I was, however surprised to see that one homosexual family was willing to help out with the efforts and even agreed to cook for the neighbors one of the days of i would provide the food. Most of the work was done by conservatives who normally mind their own business and most of the recipients of help were democrats.

Two of these close Catholic friends (democrat veteran) started lobbying to get the house of another neighbor torn down and his land held with a lien until he could pay the city back. They seemed to think they could get me on board by pointing out that his home (irreparably damaged by Hurricane Michael) was an eyesore and brought the values of our homes down. I said I understood the desire to not devalue our homes, but shouldn’t we see what we can do to help him instead of throwing him away? They were having enough trouble fixing their homes and didn’t have the bandwidth to help others. Hmmm. I thought democrats were the ones with compassion.

Then it came to time for the elections. This was the time that drove it home. All those I had been helping, who constantly came to me for advice or help on everything (mostly democrats) would talk openly about how we need to vote Trump out and how evil he was. When they asked me how I was voting, I made it clear that I had to vote my conscience. I could not vote for the murder of babies, the destruction of the nuclear family, the abandonment of the constitution I had sworn to uphold for decades, fiscal irresponsibility, etc... and there is no way I could be a part of any party that says there is no place for God. Some argued that abortion is not murder or some other lie of the left, but the majority said they didn’t want to talk about politics any more. Of course they didn’t stop talking about politics, they simply didn’t want me to talk about politics any more.

I still come to the aid of those who need it, but I am no longer deceived. I no longer think democrats can be Christians, since a true Christian must see God as good and those who openly oppose Him as workers of evil. We all make bad choices and fail to do what we know is right, but it is impossible to be a Christian (one who seeks to follow the example of and to please Christ) if we call good what is evil and evil what is good. It may sound like those wanting to separate us have won, but I understand that ‘there, but for the grace of God go I”, so I continue to strive to be a good neighbor and to love others as God loves me and them.
