By way of the crow and the map NY appears much closer to this volcano and to be hit first. Manhattan is only at about 30 feet. I live in LA , a few miles from the GOM and I’m at 35 ft.

Good question. Could it have to do with the size and depth of the continental shelf affecting the wave compression before landfall?

@WorldSigh I didn’t think of that. Okay the shelf along FL extends between from 175-215 miles. Hatteras NC is at 18 miles. NYC is about at 100 miles.. excluding the Hudson Canyon. It’s kind of hard to tell exactly because it’s raining there now and that rain layer is covering my map … it’s against policy to disable it. Anyway.. I would think more shelf, less of an affect? Am I wrong?

It appears to be a combination of shelf depth and slope.
Tsunami height on the continental shelf increases for flatter continental slopes and shallow continental shelf depths.

Tsunami height increases by 31% for decrease in continental shelf depth from 200 m to 50 m for flatter continental slopes.
•
Tsunami run-up on deeper continental shelf is higher/lower depending on steeper/flatter continental slope.
•
On steep continental slope (1:0.1), decrease in nearshore slope increases tsunami run-up up 1:632 slope and then decreases.
•
The maximum tsunami run-up depends on a combination of continental shelf profile and nearshore slope.
