Its just one generation dieing off and the new generation taking over. For centuries a fake religion and fake sense of patriotism kept most of us on the same side, but the times they are achanging. After WW2 us boomers came along and we tried to make the country more compassionate, but we failed. A lot because this stuff is just so embedded in our politics.
Now we have a lot more science that what we had before and we're learning new things but our past cultures are holding things back like they always have. People hate change but change is inevitable. Will our country survive the change? Hard to tell. But all countries collapse eventually

No society has ever existed that could actually embrace Nietzsche's "transvaluation of values"--no matter how barbaric. He was brilliant, of course, but he was also driven by a hatred of Christianity and all that he considered weak. He longed to breath fire that would incinerate timid shopkeepers and humble parsons. But one can sniff the sulfurous aroma of such a flame in the self-contradictory insanity we see around us today. But that scent does not signal a radical freedom from restraint; it signals the decline of civil society and the rise of barbarism. Nietzsche once remarked that if Christians really believed in their faith, they would still be burning heretics at the stake. So, he didn't really understand Christianity, preferring a caricature instead. But he did, at least, understand that Christ contradicted his own vision. One of the things that he wrote over and over again during his declining years of insanity was the phrase: "Dionysus versus The Crucified One," a phrase he had developed earlier for his philosophical purposes. Then again, I also understand that he felt comfort during those helpless days as his mother read passages of Scripture to him.

I've been test-driving the word transmodern(ism) for our post-post-modern reality.
