Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I suspected as much. Numbing the emotions would also make the depressed patient more susceptible to intrusive homicidal and suicidal ideation. Also read the abstract printed in Nature.

That’s the first step. Now they have to come up with a real solution to the problem. At least one that mitigates the difficulties

My idea is to restore the family in our culture. All of these people have one thing in common, broken homes.
@FuzzyMarineVet that would go a long way to fixing the problem. My sister was diagnosed with chemical imbalances and we did have a broken home. She was the only one that needed meds of the 4 kids. My youngest daughter also suffers from anxiety and depression and takes meds. We don’t have a broken family. I think a lot of it has to do with unmet expectations and feelings of I security. I wasn’t as involved with my youngest daughter all the time (military, etc… ) I was hyper involved with my first daughter.
My point is that it happens even in homes that aren’t broken. Also, broken homes don’t guarantee those problems for all in that family. Those of us that didn’t have depression issues had the added support of a close relationship with our savior. There are probably plenty of people with a strong relationship with the savior who still suffer from depression, but I believe it makes a massive difference.
@Daveclark5 You're right about the relationship with Jesus. He said many times to not hold thoughts of anxiety and fear in our minds but to rely in faith on Him and His Father to sustain us, and that may be the one thing that separates the depressed from the functional. Materialists will say, "You are what you eat." But I say that our spiritual being is more defined by what we think. We are like God in that our thoughts have a great bearing on the reality around us. I decided at the age of eight that what other people thought about me has no bearing on who I ultimately am. I am what I am an no one else defines me. The depressed often are looking to others for affirmation of their personhood, and that will never satisfy their needs.
Most meds help alleviate the symptoms but usually never fix the actual problem.

That's the big pharma business model, keep the consumer coming back for more.
I am of the persuasion that most cases of depression have otherworldly causes. This study seems to bolster that.

Yup. The reason Freud called his new science "psychology" is that he was studying the disorders of the human soul, in Greek "psyche." The soul is not part of the body, not part of the brain. The human soul bridges the physical and spiritual realms of creation.
@FuzzyMarineVet re "psyche," many miss on what that word really means. Re "spiritual realm," I prefer to think of it as the metachosm. It has objects like "mansions" and "gardens" and "rivers." Its like a hyperdimensional place or realm and not purely spiritual.
