I can't believe teachers abandoned phonics for so long and now reintroducing it is met with pushback.
Maybe they should just define what a letter is and what a word is. A letter is a symbol that represents a sound or sounds. A word is a group of letters that represent a concept. Phonics might even have something to do with pronunciation and elocution in speaking.
That might be impor-ent when learning to red and po-nounce werds, doncha think?

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.When I was in gr 2, something called "hooked on phonics" was introduced to our schools. I remember going thru the different practice cards. I thought they were cool.
My own Grandmother taught me to read when I was 5 and helped me with pronunciations so phonics never helped me a lot but I thought it was cool.

Did your Grandmother teach you the letters at all or did she just get you to recognize a word? Phonics connects the symbol (letter) with the sounds they represent. Whole language just gets you to recognize a word by sight and understand it by the context in which it is used.
Yea, she did the vowels and the sounds they make. Look for the "e" at the end of words and stuff like that. My Grandma was an educated Irish lady. My Grandad was a rough and tough English farmer with a gr 5 education who talked in slang and cusses, LOL
Who knew that babbling about social justice instead of teaching subjects would lead to undereducated kids???
