“Idiocracy” is a 2006 satirical science fiction comedy film directed by Mike Judge. The plot follows the story of an average man named Joe Bauers, played by Luke Wilson, who is selected by the U.S. military to be a part of a top-secret hibernation experiment. Along with him, a prostitute named Rita, played by Maya Rudolph, is also chosen for the experiment. They are supposed to be in hibernation for one year, but due to a series of mishaps, they end up being forgotten and remain in stasis for 500 years.
When Joe and Rita finally awaken in the year 2505, they discover that the world has become incredibly dumbed down due to generations of people with lower intelligence reproducing more rapidly than those with higher intelligence. As a result, society has become extremely anti-intellectual, and the infrastructure, government, and environment are all in a state of disarray.
Joe and Rita find themselves to be the smartest people in this new world, and Joe is eventually recruited to become the Secretary of the Interior due to his “superior” intelligence, as determined by an IQ test. He is tasked with solving various problems facing the nation, including a severe drought and a collapsing economy. Along the way, Joe discovers that the country’s crops are being irrigated with a sports drink called “Brawndo,” which has replaced water for most uses, leading to the decline in agriculture.
Joe convinces the government to switch back to using water for irrigation, initially causing chaos as the economy crashes due to Brawndo’s collapse. However, his decision ultimately saves the nation as crops begin to grow again. Joe becomes a hero, marries Rita, and is elected President. The film ends with the implication that society will start to value intelligence once more, thanks to Joe’s leadership.
