The points made are valid. However it doesn’t take into considerations that the entire world is not at the same level of dependence on technology. Furthermore, this diversity from 1st world to 3rd world economies along with the CONPLANs of the various 1st world countries considers a lot of these issues.

NORTHCOM has a CONPLAN that considers a lot of these issues. They have priorities for their deployment of resources. This is not to say that if you love in North America, you should not prepare for these contingencies. You can’t just sit on your butt waiting on Uncle Sam or Big Brother USA to come rescue you. However, it does mean panic and a “the end of civilization attitude” are appropriate either. Off the top of my head, (and based upon the CONPLANs I’ve helped to build and the experiences I’ve had with exercising CONPLANS for various contingencies a broad outline would consider the following:

1st step: make and execute a plan for how you, your family and neighbors will survive and communicate until help arrives.

2nd step: identify threats to your survival and put protections in place. (Not suggesting harming others)

3rd step: prioritize resources to maximize survival of as many as possible.

4th step: build on your local plan to increase your area of influence and safely help others.

Our neighborhood (Michael Drive and beyond) followed a similar roadmap in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Michael (hit landfall as a Cat 5 storm) We survived for about a month before the electricity was restored and a couple of months for other infrastructure.

Granted there were a lot of retired military in our neighborhood that helped each other and the elderly and less prepared, but we were not the only neighborhood that rose to the challenge.

Some neighborhoods will take the path of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina made landfall as a Cat 4 Hurricane. Those neighborhoods that choose to see the disaster as an opportunity for looting and gang warfare may not survive long enough for help to arrive, but that doesn’t mean civilization won’t survive.

Plan, don’t panic.
