We want to believe that our leaders act in our best interest but for the most part they act in their own best interest and entertain the fantasy that their interests and ours coincide.
Humans are very instinctual animals and rationality is often an illusion reinforced by cognitive dissonance. As politicians go Hillary Clinton's refusal to take any responsibility for her defeat in the 2016 election demonstrates in a rather dramatic way how driven by emotion and not rationality politics is.
To be a politician you have to feel entitled to rule. Bernie Sanders is an excellent example in that he feels entitled to three homes while pushing a message of equality. The level of cognitive dissonance is astounding. Especially considering his dismal legislative record.
For the most part the people most qualified to serve will not. Those that our willing should all be considered suspect of harboring narcissistic personalities.

To show how out of touch with reality people's political instincts are consider this. Hitler was an artist, vegetarian, animal lover, germaphobe, who refused to reproduce. Hitler was also an empath who refused to personally witness the atrocities his policies brought about and worried how they would effect his troops. Born at a different time he may have been a social justice warrior. Essential he was the exact opposite of the traditional German ruling class and it was the character of the German people to be unemotional not Hitler's. They ruthlessly and efficiently carried out his delusions not because they shared his personality but because they were in many ways by personality opposite of his.
It's no coincidence that the Nazis were socialists. It's in the name National German Socialist Workers' Party. You can quibble about the distinction between fascist and socialists but we are looking deeper than definitions. Mussolini started as a socialist and he defined fascism not the Germans. After all Marx was not the first communist even by name it is sophomoric to define socialism through Marxist ideology. Throughout history various communal cults have developed. The most infamous being those associated with the French Revolution. What characterizes them all is chaos.
In today's world the left follows a long tradition of socialist scapegoating. Today's Jew is the white male. The empathetic as it turns out lack nuance and depth. Instinct is at odds with civilization.
