China will not allow a change in the status quo in north Korea. Its a buffer between the prosperous, progressive west and chinas totalitarian government.

you do know I am guessing that the fascist/communist/totalitarian regime known as DPRK was created and maintained by Soviet Russia don't you? It was not the Chinese who created DPRK.
Ever since the collapse of the USSR I have wondered about N. Koreas relationship to Communist China. I know there is a buffer zone between DRPC and China and that some people have been killed trying to cross that zone escaping into China.
I don't believe the Chinese gov't has a lot of influence in DPRK...but I may be mistaken about that.
