I read an online article from the federalist.com this morning. It said that Tulsi Gabbard had the most google searches during and after last night's debate. That triggered a memory of something I'd read a long time ago.
There was a article back in the 1970s about The Great Soviet Encyclopedia. The writer called it "Encyclopedia Sovietica." It was the official, Marxist-Leninist encyclopedia of the Soviet Union. As a matter of fact, it's still published today.
Like the encyclopedias of our childhood it had updates. But instead of yearbooks it had instructions and loose pages. Subscribers would follow the instructions to particular pages so they could paste loose pages over politically inconvenient articles with politically approved ones. It was messy, but a convenient way to track what was in and out of fashion at the Kremlin.
We look back and laugh, but that's what Google is doing. It's an online Encyclopedia Sovietica. Oh, they don't hand out scissors and paste, they just make sure your searches don't find something the head of Responsible Innovation doesn't approve of. That's how the new Party Line is enforced.
Tulsi Gabbard should be worried what Google allows all those searches to find. It's a Brave New World, Mr. Huxley...

And here I initially thought this was going to be a comment about Tulsi Gabbard, the one democrat I think would not be a bad President, if one had to elect a democrat. Yang, at least, has some sense, too. But....very interesting and correct diversion timon! Thanks for your thoughts.

It's a good analogy. We're in new territory, since the Encyclopedia Sovietica probably didn't exist as an index of information. It had an ideology. Presumably, Google wouldn't have an ideology. It would just be an index of information. Google has put ideology into the index. The biggest problem is people think they're getting everything when really they're only getting what Google wants you to get. You're absolutely right--no different than the Encyclopedia Sovietica or the Soviet Union that was controlling the worldview. Google doesn't see it since they view themselves as merely an objective index of information. This is all VERY gross, and as more and more discussion occurs, Google is more and more morally responsible for their extreme bias. With great power comes great responsibility (Thanks Spiderman's uncle). Google has great power, but they're shirking the responsibility part. The've chosen intentionally to unbalance the scale in their favor. That literally makes them bad people. It's well past being an accident.
