The more I read of and by Derrida and his crew the less impressed I am by the lot. Even in this video it’s apparent that he started with an ax to grind, and everything that followed was calculated to obfuscate and deceive. His entire purpose is not to explain and elucidate but to confuse and confound. His inspiration Jean-Jacques Rousseau was much the same. After Voltaire read Rousseau’s essay on the morality of science, Voltaire wrote to Rousseau to say that reading his work made it seem appropriate to crawl on his hands and knees. But, continued Voltaire, he had given up that practice more than fifty years ago.

We went through a time, and we are probably still there, where people wrote to sound smart, rather than writing to communicate. It's like that battlebot thing, where those terrific geeks build robots and set them upon each other for no other reason then to see who wins. I call the modern iteration researcheze. If I can write something that you can't understand, then I must be smarter than you--or at least smart enough to be among you in the ol' dominance hierarchy. Given that, you still have to give a nod to the inherent complexity of some topics, and the truth that some people capture concepts you haven't yourself captured. So, thinking about these new ideas can be quite complex as you build a schema on which to lay the new ideas. The worst cases are when someone takes very complex ideas and further obfuscates them by writing to sound smart rather than writing to people who want to understand what you've written. Human beings are funny creatures. How smart we are, and yet how often we miss the clearest deficits in ourselves.
Ummm, but some people write as an art too. You can tell when someone loves language and when they believe that words are like money in the bank. If what you do is talk to people--grapple with big ideas--commanding a bigger bank of words is going to be more useful than trying to stretch a small number of words.
