I dunno. Aside from the repetitive “hallelujahs” the song seems pretty hopeless and despondent. It certainly doesn’t give anyone any reason to rejoice. Or even to believe in a god. Quite the opposite in fact.

I think the message is that hallelujahs come from within. The often omitted last verse:
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
is one of the most prophetic spiritual truths ever written.
There is a God!
