I think belief in God is totally acceptable. I believe that adherence to dogma, whether religious, scientific, or other, is unacceptable. And I do not respect the intellectual honesty of this man.

The advances from the Arabic peoples was before the influence of Islam at that time their religious understanding came from the same books that the nation of Israel followed. The Aramaic targums are the first five books of the Jewish Torah and the Christian bible. The common belief in a creator that formed the worlds and established order was the foundation for scientific advancement. The term Semitic refers to the descendants of Shem, the same Shem from the Noah story. The Arab and Israeli nations have a common ancestry through Abraham’s two sons Jacob and Ishmael both of which were great nations. This is the time when the stars were named and math was conceived and writing was developed. Then they turned from their God and began to follow other gods this was when they became wandering nomads and subjects to the nations around them. The decedents from Israel have found their godly heritage the Arabic peoples are just now beginning to rediscover theirs and are leaving Islam to follow the god of Abraham once more. Unless you believe that there is order in the universe you will never come to understand how it works.

I’m struggling with this right now. And the first thing I notice is that belief in God doesn’t necessarily prevent or inhibit scientific endeavor. Tyson himself acknowledges that a quarter of the Nobel prizes awarded have gone to Jews. It is the demonization of knowledge, reason, and rationality that does the damage. Islam has demonstrated that that damage can last a very long time—and can manifest in many dangerous ways.

At the same time, I certainly acknowledge that religious beliefs do not seem to assist the scientific method. The only thing about religion that might be valuable to science is the possible insertion of a moral framework into the research model. And even then, I strongly suspect that inhibiting research on moral grounds is not always (or even often) a good idea. I’d much rather know than not know.

The tension between revelation and rationality is perhaps an indispensable aspect of the human condition. When that scale is tilted one way or the other though, humanity loses.

I would say religious scriptures could be beneficial for psychology and/ or philosophic studies, which may transcend ones understanding of their moralistic and scientific studies as well as other forms of academics, in a way seamlessly connecting one subject to the other. Almost as if to discover the missing link

@DesireNoDesires Perhaps. But it strikes me psychology and philosophy have long been divorced from the “hard” sciences. Religious texts may be useful (or even essential) to the study of philosophy and psychology (see e.g., Maps of Meaning by Peterson), but I doubt their usefulness in studying mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy or the like. And Tyson here is talking specifically about the relationship between religion and these hard sciences.

@GaryWitt they would be useful in the sense of insuring the mental stability and moral values of the researchers so that they wouldnt become vulnerable to manipulation...for example becoming compromised by and eventually selling out to politicians whom are interested in their technological advancements to being weaponized and used in military warfare. Why you think NASA funding's seemed to be completely cut off after the end of the first space race ? They no longer had any use for NASA once they gained the developments they were interested in, people like that don't see any benefits from actual space research.
