That is, no one can verify it without expert testimony, and they have their own "experts" who will testify that everyone else is wrong. From then on its a pissing contest, not about what is true.

"We have been conditioned by media and government to Fear, have we not?" That not only hit the nail on the head but drove it home with a single blow of the hammer. Back when I was in third grade I started noticing all the things they claimed were going to kill us all. A new ice age was coming and by the end of the 20th Centruty the story was that the top half of the United States, and all of Canada would be uninhabitable. They also told us by this time in history at least half the U. S. would be a garbage dump. The made up crude oil shoartage lead to hysteria about fossil fuels disappearing and the chaos it would inflict on the world. The threat of nuclear war, and the fact any smart person could make a suit case sized nuke was prominent through my grade school years, illegal drugs. Then global warming, world drought that became flooding due to the ice cpas being melted away. Of course the commie threat that the Reagan administration saw coming to an end so it set up Al Qeida and the next threat that would mean more and more intrusive laws, and less and less liberty and rule of Consitution. Now this virus scare taking away liberties they could not use with the terrorist threat to end.

I believe you. When you scare people they want to be handed security, no matter how much freedom is dumped in the garbage. As Plato said over 2 thousand years ago. "Citizens only concern is the stone in their own sandle". And even today the politicians take advantage of that.
Absolutely! Totally overblown. After all this, we'll have a nation (a world) full of germophobes, Pathophobes, anthrophobes, etc. Everyone will have PTSD and the Psychiatrists will get rich. But our people will be a bunch of wimps, afraid of their own shadows.
