It's your job, so you have a responsibility to perform it, but these are unique circumstances. Before going back in, I would have to know how many other officers will be on duty around the clock and the specific conditions under which I could use deadly force. I'd have to know the city had my back, and in Seattle that's a tough sell. If I didn't feel I could properly defend myself and protect others, I'd have no choice but to resign. But saying no or shirking my duties while still being paid? Uh-uh.

Do you think you'd be able to trust whether or not the City really "had your back"? That's a hard call, as trust should be earned, and not handed out, especially to those who have shown to not be trust-worthy in recent history.
@DeplorableToo In the case of Seattle, no. Given the actions of the mayor, make it a hell no. That's why, if I was a police officer up there and was being called back to work, I'd have to do some serious soul-searching. Not performing the duties I'm paid to do, to the best of my abilities, wouldn't be an option. If I determined the risk to be too great, I'd resign.
@coalburned, I'd have to agree with you. Your priorities would have to be to your family first. To place yourself in a dangerous position, that may make you and your family potential targets, is not one that anyone should consciously place themselves in.

What makes police accountable to the public is discipline. If they are not following orders as long as they are employed, they are unaccountable, and worse: they become dangerous to their partners.
Police are not like some teen who decides he doesn’t feel like it today. They are either cops, not choosing which orders to obey, or flipping burgers.

If I was employed there I would have to take a serious look at taking a job somewhere else. As a police officer you are counting on these departments and local governments to provide you with the training and the equipment to do your job. If you are doing your job in good faith and according to the training you have received, you would hope they have your back. This includes legal defense in both criminal and civil litigation and the court of public opinion.
