I was a member of the Park Slope Food Co-op, a rallying point and command central for the People’s Republic of Park Slope, Brooklyn, during the period when the Iron Curtain was disintegrating all across Eastern Europe and Russia. It was a heady time, with the word “Freedom” splashed liberally thoughout the media coverage, used without irony or qualification. I recall the air of gloom that enveloped my fellow workers. One woman seethed, “Yeah, okay, they’re free. Free to be unemployed, free to be poor. Free to not be able to pay for their doctor.” She was genuinely bitter. This went beyond philosophy. She was morally offended that the intrinsic virtue of her position could possibly be resisted by anyone, most specifically, the poor, exploited souls she wanted to “help.”
As Peterson points out, by this time it had been at least 20 years since the brutal truth Of Marxism was undeniably displayed for the whole world to see. For people like her, it doesn’t matter. It certainly doesn’t matter to the mob in the streets. As much as I love Jordan Peterson, I fear we’re past discussion of any sort. You don’t bring a philosophy text to a knife fight. You bring a gun. And lots of ammunition.

While I love Jordan Peterson, I just have never seen a Marxist shut up. When you show them pitfalls on their path, they just find another way around. When you show them that they are heading toward quicksand, they see only an illusion of utopia. It’s as if they successfully completely disregard human nature. Their ideal world “would work” if not for human nature.....and that’s why their ideal world will never work.

You just hit on the #1 problem I run into when discussing ideas with socialists/Marxists...complete disregard of human nature. Let's face it...any of us could come up with a viable socioeconomic system if not that pesky curse...aka human nature. People who choose to ignore the reality and inevitable impact of human nature are either completely ignorant or have an underlying devious intent.
I just keep asking them questions, like what happened to equal outcomes in Soviet Russia, China, Cuba, Congo, Cambodia, the Balkans, Scandinavia, VietNam, Korea.... and when they assert they all created it, I give them the income disparity and standards of living. Some can’t stand up to that. Most have their minds completely closed to reason.

I know we're all wired differently, but that's one I simply can't understand. Are some people truly devoid of reason, or is it a choice they make?

You nailed it. Truth is, reason has nothing to do with it. The left is a religion and always has been, as faith-based as the most confirmed evangelical congregation. The beautiful thing about faith: not only is it impervious to reason, it grows stronger as logical arguments are brought against it. “Belief in things for which there is no evidence.” That’s the whole point. How else to explain blind adherence to an ideology with an unblemished 150-year track record of failure every time some of its adherents get in power?
When forced, The justifications are nonsensical: that wasn’t true socialism; the wrong people were in charge; this time we’ll make sure we’re properly funded.
At least Christian faith brings with it a measure of compassion for infidels and non-believers. The left has only ridicule and scorn. They aren’t interested in listening to you. They want to eliminate you.
@Edgework, Once again, eloquently stated and I completely agree. Enough of us in agreement may not prove it fact, however a critical mass of agreement does have an effect on human belief. Keep up the good fight. As Dr. Jordan Peterson said: "Lets try not to win, like they do. You can't win, but go for peace."
