Huge numbers of men know that they will never have a family. I suspect that many of them don't even have sex on a regular basis. Many of them might be beyond what we normally consider military service age, they could still function effectively enough. Many others are military service age. In a war, China could lose huge numbers of poorly-trained soldiers and still win through attrition. Desperate men might not even protest much at being used that way, particularly if they were promised wives from any places that they conquered. The situation gives China a chance to try to push other countries around if it wants. I don't know whether China really wants war with Russia, but I'm sure it's willing to try pushing a bit to see what happens. We also don't know how big an impact the COVID-19 sickness had in Russia. Russia simply refuses to release all the numbers. If Russia is hurting more than we think, China might feel an even greater willingness to push at any situation.
