It was 40 years ago today. If you’d been there in front of your flickering B & W TV screen in February, 1964 watching The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, then you were also present for the other landmark events of the 60s— assassinations, cities burning, moonwalks, the seismic shifts in cultural norms—and through it all, the soundtrack of the decade, six years of music that helped fuel the transformations. Add to it that grim day when it all, finally, ended for good,
More people are alive today who don’t remember The Beatles than those of us who were there. And yet, their influence remains. When Giles Martin’s remastered “Abbey Road” was issued last year, it shot to the top of the charts. 50 years after both The Beatles, and the 60s, passed into history. Boomer nostalgia can’t account for that.
The cheesy politics of the times are long forgotten. Likewise the clumsy efforts to make Lennon first an avatar, then a cultural martyr. He’s remembered today as he would have wanted to be: a guy trying to make music. Four decades on, the music endures.

But their cultural significance wasn't lost on me, so like other major events, I remember exactly where I was when I heard of his death. And while my musical tastes didn't include their music, many of my favorites were heavily influenced by them. Other than Elvis, I'm not sure anyone has had such a profound legacy.
