The American Revolution: Was it Biblical?
Given the current climate, in which some have actually spoken again of a revolution, I though this article would be of help to my fellow Christians in thinking through the matter. I thought about posting this article just to the Biblical Christianity group, given it's subject matter. However, it seemed to me that others might also be interested in what has long been a sort of in-house debate among orthodox, Bible believing Christians here in America. As I point out in the beginning of the article, "I acknowledge up front that this question is one that has been strongly debated by Christians at times. In fact, there was not consistent agreement among Christians at the time of the [American] Revolution either."
So, what does the Bible have to say, if anything, about the idea of Christians taking part in a revolt against whatever government under which they may live? And what does the Bible say about the issue of civil disobedience? And How are these two issues -- revolution and civil disobedience -- related? These are the issues with which the article seeks to deal in a brief, yet hopefully somewhat thorough, way. As always, I welcome feedback. I am already planning to republish the article soon with a few updates, and you all might help me to make it better.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I think you must rely a tad less on the Bible for this question, and a tad more on English law as the English themselves would have considered it were it being applied to themselves in their own land rather than upon Englishmen in a land beyond representation within the governing structures in place.

Well, an article about whether or not the American Revolution was Biblical can hardly ignore the bible when seeking an answer.
I did say a tad. Context would at least consider whether the authority from God still holds when the government is arguably not ruling within its own custom.
@govols Yes, you did say a "tad." My response was not as nuanced as it should have been. I would agree that we should not only consider the context in which the biblical text should be understood -- the context in which it was written -- but also the context to which we are applying its teachings. But we must not confuse the difference between the accurate exegesis of the text as the authority for the believers on the one hand and the application of the text to the lives of believers on the other hand. For orthodox, Bible believing Christians, the issue is one of authority, and your suggestion seems to all too easily subvert the authority of the Bible in the life of the believer by importing the assumptions of English law and forcing the Bible to be read in light of them. At any rate, I repeat my point that the article was not about English law but about what the Bible says, and I hope you can see more clearly why that was my focus.
This article gives a fair and accurate description of what the Bible has to say about this issue - as challenging as it can be to obey sometimes...
