Left-wing actress Alyssa Milano, appearing on a podcast for People magazine, lamented giving birth because she “wasn’t in control.” She said there were too many people involved and she didn’t enjoy “the fact that lots of people had access to my vagina.”

My daughter just gave birth to her 5th; I hope she has never felt that way. I remember her excitement with each of the births. The nesting period was a time when she seemed to relish all the control, telling each of us what she wanted from us and how she wanted us to help out with the preparations and who got to be in the room with her (her husband was always there and her Mom and sisters got to be there during different births. Maybe she missed out on the nesting period or maybe she doesn’t have a loving family to support the joyous event.
This must not be the whole story. I’m no fan of hers, but this might be taken out of context (or it might not). I hope the baby grows up with plenty of love and nurturing. Bad starts don’t have to be bad endings.

Did she actually lament giving birth or is that just someone’s characterisation?
Admittedly, my initial reaction was laughter, but PTSD from traumatic experiences like sexual assault can be triggered even by things that other people take for granted as normal, everyday experiences. How much more with an experience like giving birth which (I’m told) can be quite painful and, as she said, is a situation very much out of the control of the mother once it is upon her?
I am sure she has an awareness and appreciation for the fact that the people who were present were there for her benefit and the baby’s, and that they did the things they did with their best interests in mind and at heart.
I’m certainly no fan of hers, by the way.

A nice thing for a child to hear down the road. Love to be a fly on the wall as she tries to explain to her child about her regret in giving birth... Mother of the Year accolades not in her future me thinks..
