"First they came …" is the poetic form of a 1946 post-war confessional prose by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the silence of German intellectuals and certain clergy—including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself—following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Many variations and adaptations in the spirit of the original have been published in the English language. It deals with themes of persecution, guilt, repentance, and personal responsibility.

The best-known versions of the confession in English are the edited versions in poetic form that began circulating by the 1950s.[1] The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum quotes the following text as one of the many poetic versions of the speech:[2][3]

I could be wrong, but it seems clear to me that we have a TROLL posting utter nonsense with no details as to why he hates somebody bad enough that that person should go to jail. (No alleged crimes, no evidence of wrongdoing, just “he let me down, so lock up the somma… “ ).

I won’t be seeing his comments anymore as I have blocked him as I do with all TROLLS. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, you may have blocked him also. The name he chose appears to be something a monkey would come up with while pounding on a keyboard.
