The Jetsons came out in 1962. Kids grew up believing that the sky would someday be full of flying cars. They're disappointed.
Space 2001 came out in 1968, and the technology in the film is better than what we have in 2022.
Neil Stevenson published the novel "Snowcrash" in 1992, and it depicts a future virtual world that's cooler than what we have today.
Snowcrash features radioisotope power, which enables Star Wars gadgets. We could have Star Wars gadgets, but the government won't let us to have nice things.
The government is trying to send us back to the Flintstones.

I agree with you up to a point. What Hollywood can simulate on film is not always within the realm of physics. Some things accidentally inspired modern miracles, such as light sensitive inducers - seen on Star Trek before appearing in reality. But most fictional ideas will remain fiction - including “radio-isotope power.” A great name for a micro joule amount of power; useless to even lift a mosquito.
But your point is correct. Police states do not inspire innovation. Representative republics do. And we are moving rapidly to the former.

Star Trek ~ Kirk's era, looked like everyone had desktops in their quarters. When I got my Motorola flip phone, my mom said "OOhhh, you finally got your communicator."
Instead of the Jetsons, we have Li'l Greta lecturing us to adopt asceticism.
