They are in a manner of speaking, living in the abstract realm. We see a mushroom cloud and hear a giant roar - and we see things and living things reduced to a fine radioactive dust - in movies - whilst sitting comfortably in a seat, eating snack foods and imagining ourselves to be the heroic, smart person who said and did the absolutely correct thing - yet the bomb detonated anyhow. So we knowingly shake our heads and think to ourselves "I told em - I warned em - they should have listened to me"...then we go to bed that night somehow convinced that we are wiser than we are. We imagine knowing where to go, how to act, what to do and say if and when the next "Civil War" or "Societal Collapse" happens - and WE DON'T - Not REALLY.
Only in the abstract are we knowing, wise, strong, determined to do things that in any semblance of a REAL LIFE disaster we would find ourselves not only physically ill prepared but psychologically so.
Panic might easily set in where we had imagined, abstractly, we would remain calm and strong because after all, we "knew" what to do - and in reality we did not - do not know.
