They are claiming one or the other based on what is advantageous at the moment.

Like everything else in the 2020s, there's a double-standard. It's a private company when they're doing something "our side" likes and a monopoly that needs to be struck down when they don't.
To me, this is a larger symptom of the fact that roughly half the country thinks it appropriate that the other half be silenced from speaking because they do not agree with the message. I cannot think of anything more un-American than that sentiment, but a whole lot of people seem to think that's no big deal.
There is a reason that the freedom of speech and expression is the first right enumerated in the Bill of Rights, because our Framers thought it the most important. But now? Now we live in a nation that doesn't blanch at the idea that the Constitution is a "quaint old thing that no longer serves a purpose," and that the Electoral College needs to go. That our Founders are just "old white supremacist slave-owners," as if that were the only thing that defined them.
We are living in the end of days for the United States of America. Why? Because the voting majority wants it that way.

Private companies can have tremendous public impact. Monopolies and oligopolies are not good, for the same reason big govt isn't. Idealists may disagree, but human nature seems incapable of not abusing that much power.

It's a private company is valid but they - social media - are not honest about who or what they are. Their "customers" are their products.
