I am watching the unfolding of the latest chapter in the ongoing Resistance Follies with mixed feelings. On the one hand it’s been gratifying to see that there really are worms under the rocks, and termites in the woodwork, and that they’re being forced out into the open. On the other, I really expected them to be better than this.

It was 1975 when I read “They’ve Shot the President,” by Robert Sam Anson, the book that made it respectable once more to question the official narrative of the Warren Commission Report on John Kennedy’s murder. From that moment on, I stopped believing in official narratives of any stripe or hue, assuming that “they,” whoever they were, would lie as a matter of official policy.

For the next 45 years, that seemed a prudent assumption as one “tragedy,” “disaster” or “catastrophe,” after the next came bundled with myriad questions ignored by the official narrative, and a media utterly disinterested in asking them. The 60’s assassinations, the attempted Reagan assassination, the Oklahoma City bombing, the downing of TWA 800, the 9/11 attacks, all gave ample reason to suspect invisible hands behind the scenes, pulling levers and executing stage commands to keep the deceptions in place, and marginalize everyone who suspected that we were only seeing a superficial account. Well guess what? There really is a power behind the curtain, and it has many public faces. And what a let down.

Adam Schiff? Nancy Pelosi? Jerry Nadler? John Brennen? Comey? Seriously? This is the vaunted deep state? And this parade of fiascos is the best they can do? I begin to see how they could get the Bay of Pigs invasion so wrong. How they could spend a decade trying to kill Fidel Castro with tricks like trying to set his beard on fire or poison his coffee cup. How they botched the Iran Hostages. Why they never expected the fall of the Soviet Union. Why they looked for Bin Laden for eleven years while he was hiding in plain sight. Why every one of their cover-ups is so full of holes, they’d never have a chance to pull them off without a bought and paid for media and a gaggle of corrupt politicians running interference.

But their biggest blunder was assuming Hillary would win, and their attempts to compensate for that oversight have shown us what Keystone Cops they really are. They’re just making shit up as they go along, and they’re not very good at it. It’s disheartening, really: you spend years preparing to meet the enemy, and you find out they’re straight out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Their bad intentions may be limited by their clumsy technique, but they can still do a lot of damage. However, there’s another thing they’ve gotten wrong: the political process is not yet dead. They still have to contend with all those pesky voters out there and judging from the impeachment circus, they have no idea how to do it, other than to destroy the whole government.

Good luck with that. We live in interesting times, yes?
