@WilyRickWiles It does not work in Belgium. Their free healthcare is killing the economy and they have very high taxes already. It is because there is no limitations on health care. How you pay for it is not a distraction. IN Engineering we say “the devil is in the detail”. In NZ we also have free health care but it is very limited. It works because it is so limited. You need to be very specific what free health care means and how you are going to fund it. It is more than healthcare. It is the basic question of what is the minimum quality of life everyone should have... and then how are you going to tax to pay for it. It necessarily means that the hard working and productive gets less than they give and the lazy unproductive gets more than what they give.

@WilyRickWiles Thanks, that is exactly my point. The terms have been so abused and misused that each person now have his own little interpretation (and I include myself here). What we do not have is an honest and clear set of policies by modern politicians that drives me nuts. I think that is part why I appreciate Trump, despite all his other obvious faults, he actually say stuff and then do it. Most of the time. With the “established” politicians it is all smoke and mirrors and look over there. What we are seeing worldwide in the changes in voting is not a rise of conservatism but a revolt against dishonest politicians. Anyway my opinion on the matter.

Defining of things correctly is so important. I have been called pedantic for trying to create accurate explanations what the term Social Democrat and Democratic Socialist means. We are being told (and I have been told this by several socialists and one communist) that these terms are interchangeable. However reading what the socialists groups actually say and compare what is actually happening in North West Europe, it is not the same thing and differences are very important. It is this socialism by stealth that worries me. If people actually understood what Sanders et al is standing for... their time as politicians will be very short.

We all agree (OK, I agree at least) that what is happening in some of the countries you mention is not what we want. Again, this fascism is easily identified for what it is. If a new and popular political party in the USA or UK or NZ etc etc start saying let’s give fascism another go, we would all be up in arms with you stopping it. What we (or rather what I want) is a strong capitalist economy supporting social support systems especially regarding education and a realistic level of public health. @Biosphere Socialism only works when there is significant equality in productivity and income and a culture of personal responsibility where being lazy or greedy is culturally unacceptable. Else the lazy and stupid just live of the labours of the hard working. Very soon everybody is lazy and no one is left to do the work and you need to step up to communism to keep things going. Once you have significant equality in productivity and a culture of personal responsibility, you do not need socialism since everybody can take care of themselves and the market takes care of everything else. Finland would be a good example, it would work great whether you have the current capitalist system or a socialist system. But you need the Finnish culture and everything that goes with that. So socialism would work in Finland, but they do not need it. What they have is a strong capitalist economy with heavy taxation that support generous social benefits that everybody almost equally contribute to and benefit from over a persons lifetime. And it works very well.

However, if you have no economy to pay for it, how will it succeed? I think that is the crux of my issue with democratic socialists. You want the good stuff social services provide, however you provide no reasonable model of how to pay for it. You recently stated that a few hundred billion will not harm the US economy. My question is what health care does a few hundred billion buy you. From my experience, minimum healthcare (to a standard that matters), is about $500 per month per person. (This is based on good private health care in medium economy country. In Belgium it is significantly higher.) that is $6 000 per annum and for the US $2 000 billion. Your few hundred billion will not cut it. Not even the extra $1 trillion your article advocates. Now I read Sanders arguments... even if you save the money he thinks he will, the issue is you still have to pay for it and it is currently paid for by the capitalist economy. The only reasonable way of achieving the social services you want is through capitalism. So for socialists to campaign for these services is a bit like a cattle farmer campaigning for a vegetarian lifestyle.

@WilyRickWiles Oh, I read the DSA website you gave me. Then I compared that with the system that is in place in Finland. You can attach meaning as much as you want... the system you prescribe to is not the Nordic model. Your claims that they are the same is the issue here. I am personally a big fan of the Nordic model by the way. Strong work culture brought on by centuries of personal responsibility and Lutheran values... combined with strong social services that makes life great for everyone. Pushing that hard here in NZ.

It is a world wide problem. Not just US but any country worth living in. The rubbish countries of course have no such problem as they are shedding their population to the worthwhile countries as fast as they can.

@EAL_Flt1979 I have been unemployed several times of no fault of my own. I emigrated twice, did many different jobs ... all the time taking PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for my own life. So no, I was never homeless, even though I had plenty of opportunity. I did not just stay where it was nice and said woe am I. It is very disappointing to get the impression of you as just another do-gooder who do and say things to feel good about yourself and not solve the actual problems in the world we are facing.

@WilyRickWiles experience. What makes you think they will not? Care to share example where people have not? Do you really think all the failed socialist countries in the world... that their founders started out thinking let’s do bad stuff. No, they had the same noble ideas you and I have... I would much rather live in a capitalist dystopia (eg USA) than a socialist dystopia (China or Russia). Of course we want something better than both current USA and China... but let us at least start with a realistic economic model.
