Mitch McConnell says it’s time we took seriously the left’s assaults on our governing institutions.
Really? Gosh, Mitch, what was your first clue?
You’ve been there for how many decades? And only now do you suddenly decide that the left has been serious sll this time. Yes, Mitch, they meant it. They are serious.
I welcome our Senate majority leader finally waking up. And the speech he gave this weekend was certainly welcome. Too bad no one thought to talk like this 40 years ago.
Oh, right. Someone did. They tried to kill him, then he went on to end the Cold War. Too bad we’ve had to wait so long to get another president willing to speak the truth. And too bad he’s had to stand virtually alone for most of his administration.

Any Constitutionalist must be pretty careful to tread a fine line if they are going to stay in office long enough to keep fighting for the Constitution.
I agree with you about recognizing McConnell's risk, and that with the President's recent speech as cover, maybe he can risk speaking out a bit more.
A lot like conservatives among the people. A lot of us can not have any kind of respectful conversation without someone being uncivil. That's the Left winning the agenda by brainwashing even some on the right to adopt their criticism of everything, to destabilize and de-ligitimize our system.
Just like the President standing almost alone as the one-man frontline against the assault on our Constitution. Unless we vocally support him to every one of our Representatives, he may not succeed.

Your posts are always well reasoned and presented. I can’t quarrel with much of anything that you say. This post is no exception.
Where I think we are talking about different things is exemplified by your opening paragraph:

That is the behavior that we must change, that impulse to stay quiet, to tread cautiously, to hide in plain sight. I lived thirty years in Park Slope, Brooklyn, an intellectual people’s republic if ever there was one. I know about hiding in plain sight. I also know the consequences of speaking up and telling the truth. You lose friends.
But that’s what Trump does. He’s accused of thuggish behavior, of extreme views, and, of course, racism. Meanwhile, he’s almost single-handedly rammed topics into the nation conversation that needed to go public.
@Edgework. Well stated, as usual, and I agree that the President is winning by speaking out. But he is among an extremely small percentage of people who can do so effectively - partly because he is a pretty tough character. He has withstood withering attempts to remove him from office that McConnell would not have survived politically.
Slow and steady wins the race. Mitch McConnell is very good at making sausage. He's had some insightful things to say but, like most conservatives, unless you betray the party, no one hears about it. If conservatives put up a more conservative Kentucky senator then fine. Otherwise, he ain't no Romney.
