Political Discussions from the Pulpit?

Many have condemned pastors for saying anything political from the pulpit, reasoning that it is inappropriate and out of the bounds of the pastors’ authority or even his permissive topics. This may be due to a true misconception of the pastors’ responsibilities or because of a misinterpretation of our US constitution and its amendments or even from a fear of losing the church’s tax-exempt status (due to the misinterpretation of the constitution and its amendments). Regardless of the reasons for the misconception, the idea is WRONG, as it contradicts the Bible.

The Bible is God’s love letter to His children. In that “love letter” He shows His children (those who have a saving relations with their Creator) how to live a successful and fulfilling life. It is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). Why would we turn of the light and grope in the dark in ANY aspect of our life? Every aspect of life should be seen through the lense/filter of God’s word (the Bible). If we truly believe this, how can we say the pastor shouldn’t speak about politics or the things going on in the political sphere.

We listen to the Pastor on other subjects because he has made it his full time occupation to study and understand the Bible (God inspired words/messages, written by many through whom He conveyed the messages) and to lead the congregation based upon that understanding unto a closer relationship with their God. We hope to gain insight beyond our own personal studies; insight that will help us live out best life. We hope he will give us a perspective on the issues of everyday life that will help us understand what God would have us know about what is going on in our lives and how we can best deal with those revelations. We are fools to ask him not to illuminate ANY specific subject or aspect of our daily walk.

As a pastor who typically teaches expositionally through books of the Bible, I try to address any and every issue to which the text speaks or to which valid application of the text may be made. This means that I fairly often touch on current issues from a Christian perspective. Although I don't recall ever explicitly endorsing any candidate from the pulpit, I'm quite sure that positions taken there have ruled out many candidates while making many others more attractive to my congregation. So be it.

For example, if I teach the Biblical view that things like abortion and gay marriage are sinful, then I will clearly be promoting a conservative point of view rather than a liberal one, and this will lead members of the church to be much more likely to vote for some candidates rather than others. Again, so be it. I must fulfill my God-given calling, and I will do so as faithfully as I can. I make no apologies for it.

A person's faith should inform all aspects of their life. We shouldn't have a God drawer where we keep our relationship with God separate from our socks and underwear.
