In the Reagan Era, the press leaned left. Most Republicans decided to play it safe and were afraid
of the press. The leftward press bias sucked, but angering the press was even worse.
Trump solved the problem. Let there be a leftward press and a rightward press. Strike back at the leftward press. The rightward press is backing you up. Mock the left for being fake news.
Centuries ago, the press was neutral (on average). Today, the press has been
dragged into the political war. There is no longer any such thing as neutral
press.
The left wants to censor rightward news. Leftists are bigots.
You would think that someone would produce neutral news. You would think there
would be a market for it. Seems not.

I don't think the press was ever neutral. Newspapers had openly declared political biases in the 19th and 20th centuries. University schools of journalism began to take over what was then a mostly blue collar trade. It became a 'profession.' Towards the middle of the twentieth century journalists began to proclaim themselves a priesthood of truth (truth being defined as generally liberal). But 'generally liberal' morphed into explicitly liberal, then anti-American liberal, then leftist. As they say in the history business, "hence the papacy."

I agree. I was being overly simplistic. That's why I included the clause "on average". Yes, there existed both rightward and leftward newspapers, but they coexisted in peace. Plus, the average American was far more conservative than today.
In the 18th century, it may have been possible for rightward and leftward journalists to drink together in a bar. Not today. Back then, there was feedback between right and left. Not today.
In the Lincoln Douglas debates, rightward and leftward newspapers printed the entirety of what both candidates said. A leftward newspaper printed what Douglas said, but they added grammatical polish. It published Lincoln's word raw, unpolished. Rightward newspapers did the reverse.
In the Lincoln-Douglas debates, both rightward and leftward newspapers published the words of the opposition. Today, rightward newspapers publish the words of both sides, and leftists censor rightward newspapers.
