As a contract worker, albeit full-time for a single employer, I assumed, when the work shut down from the Kung Flu, that I was fucked. But wait! A ray of hope! Seems I qualify for benefits after all. I just need to file a claim. What could be simpler? This is Texas, after-all, the original “get ‘er done” state. So I went online and filled out my application. Bring on the checks!
Well, no. Got an email telling me I would be ready to go, just needed to supply some additional information. A handy-dandy phone number was supplied. “Just give us a call and we’ll get you up and running, pronto.”
So far I’ve found at least four different levels of failure prepared for schmucks like me.
First, and most immediate, is the simple chime in ascending fourths—DING DING DING—with the cheerful lady informing me, “We’re sorry, your call did not go through.” Got it—too many calls, the system is flooded, try again. And keep trying.
Sometimes you actually get a ring! Wow! I got through! No. Same message as before, except this time it’s a guy. You lose.
Then, there’s the occasional busy signal. Still no contact, true, but at least you sense there’s something happening on the other side of the busy signal, like a friendly village on the other side of the mountain. Meanwhile, you’re stuck here in the desert.
Then, there’s a ring that gets answered. Really answered. “Welcome to Texas Workforce Commission. For English, press one.” Ok, now we’re talking. I press “1” and then, in perfect English, as requested, “Due to the high volume of calls, we can’t take your call right now.”
So maybe there’s an email help desk? No. Sorry. “You qualify for help, but we’ve cleverly made it impossible for you to actually get it. Tough shit.
I have only pity for the poor souls whose lives are defined by the need to navigate such bureaucratic potholes on a daily basis. Maybe that’s why Ronald Reagan claimed the most frightening words in the English language are “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

This is the thing that pisses me off the most about George Carlin's servicing of the customer. All of that bloat, all of the annual appropriations, all of the managerial layers, thousands of employees and pages of policies and procedures--all for nothing when the feces hurtles through the fan.
I am so bless to be currently suffering only slightly.
