GaryWitt comments on Sep 12, 2019:
The Matrix franchise is good art because it has complexity and (mostly) consistency. It’s open to multiple interpretations, none of which is “the” right one. Problems arise whenever someone seizes on one or two themes from the series and then insists they contain some kind of indictment or condemnation or (worse) prediction. It’s essentially a comic book. There is no such thing as a red pill. But what if...?

GaryWitt comments on Sep 8, 2019:
If I remember correctly Socrates was convicted on fabricated charges of having “corrupted” the youth of Athens. The crime apparently carried the death penalty, which Socrates accepted. He drank hemlock, and died surrounded by his remaining supporters. The ultimate hecklers’ veto.

GaryWitt comments on Sep 8, 2019:
I’ve been reading Rousseau’s The Social Contract lately and I’m seeing the seeds of modern authoritarianism throughout the text. More than once, he has said we must “force people to be free.” And he defines freedom as “a complete surrender to the state.” So even then, in 1762, there was this sanctimonious, “only I know what is best for you” philosophy. The Reign of Terror followed.

In Hong Kong, the violence is escalating, used by both protesters and the police.
GaryWitt comments on Sep 1, 2019:
The Hong Kong protesters are trying to change an unjust regime, when there is no legal mechanism in place to do that. We often take democracy for granted here, but they are struggling to establish it. So the “law” may be “on the side of the police,” but the question then becomes “why is that?” And the answer is there is no legal way to unseat a totalitarian regime. So any reasoning that depends on the “law” here becomes circular.

GaryWitt comments on Aug 30, 2019:
The hypocrisy of the left is on full display whenever attention turns to the plight of women under Sharia law. They mostly turn a blind eye to the blatant and brutal violations of human rights, or alternatively mock coverage of the issue by asserting it is unimportant. Fifteen years in an Iranian prison for refusing to wear the hijab is unimportant to them. It’s only a headscarf, they say. Chill. I say no.

GaryWitt comments on Aug 29, 2019:
Couldn’t finish watching this. I kept wondering which was correct: was the evidence so flimsy that the case went nowhere or were the people implicated so powerful that they were able to put the brakes on it. If the former, then why is this resurfacing now? If the latter (clearly the view of the producers) then surely the corruption doesn’t stop with pedophilia. Either way, we need facts, not innuendo. And I’m not finding facts in this blurry film with mumbling audio.

When you talk about culture.
GaryWitt comments on Aug 26, 2019:
This is fascinating. Digitizing the sound made it malleable and producers were then able to make it conform to a strict pattern that was not previously possible. But the result is an unnatural precision. Here’s another question, more applicable to jazz and contemporary orchestral music: why did musicians and composers decide that minimalism is a good thing?
Do you think greed is actually good for economy?
GaryWitt comments on Aug 26, 2019:
Greed is a loaded word; a pejorative descriptor with a built in condemnation included. So when Hollywood has a Gordon Gekko spouting “greed is good,” it’s really an effort to paint an entire segment of the population—businessmen and women—as morally twisted. The definitions of greed or avarice both contain the notion of “excessive” or “insatiable.” Is greed good? Of course not. It’s morally reprehensible. But it is a characteristic of an individual, not a population. Each of us has an obligation to decide how we will live. We must make choices; moral, intellectual, practical, large, and small. All with consequences. Is a decision that harms others or impairs your reputation for truth and veracity a good decision? Similarly is a decision that brings benefit to others but financial ruin to you a good decision?
I don't know how to respond to this. I'm flabbergasted.
GaryWitt comments on Aug 25, 2019:
This is clearly CCP propaganda. How it has proliferated is anyone’s guess, but there are very few issues in this world that are as black and white as the struggle of the Hong Kongers against the CCP.

Madebyjimbob: Moral relativism offers no basis on which to make moral value judgments.
GaryWitt comments on Aug 22, 2019:
I think when you take morality to a fairly abstract level, for example with the question, “Are my actions harming anyone?” then you can at least begin to discover absolute truths. The fact that people view their own actions as moral does not make them so. Hence, relativism does not fly.

The value of money v the value of produce.
GaryWitt comments on Aug 20, 2019:
I suppose money could become worthless, as in Venezuela, and therefore be disconnected from value. That’s certainly happening, but not in the US or Europe. Or perhaps people could think their efforts are undervalued because they deserve more money than they are receiving for their work. But in that case all they need to do is change jobs or employers to test the truth of that belief. Love it or hate it, the market doesn’t lie about that. But let me add that I personally find value in my work, in the form of satisfaction for a job well done, and the knowledge that if my work is not valued I can and will move on to something different and perhaps better. So, value comes in many guises.

The more I read of and by Derrida and his crew the less impressed I am by the lot. Even in this video it’s apparent that he started with an ax to grind, and everything that followed was calculated to obfuscate and deceive. His entire purpose is not to explain and elucidate but to confuse and confound. His inspiration Jean-Jacques Rousseau was much the same. After Voltaire read Rousseau’s essay on the morality of science, Voltaire wrote to Rousseau to say that reading his work made it seem appropriate to crawl on his hands and knees. But, continued Voltaire, he had given up that practice more than fifty years ago.

Is the homeless "epidemic" getting better or worse?
GaryWitt comments on Aug 11, 2019:
Interesting. I don’t have a ready answer, but it would appear that the unsheltered homeless are becoming more visible, but not (overall) more numerous. Media focus, including social media, is likely a contributing factor to that increased visibility. But are the unsheltered homeless congregating more, whereas they were previously more dispersed? If so, are they really attracted to specific political environments? These questions might not be answerable. But I can say, at least anecdotally, that when Colorado and Oregon first legalized marijuana there was a distinct spike in the homeless population in both places. So there is a likelihood that the homeless do in fact pay attention to the political climate, and plan their migrations accordingly.

I am a libertarian By the way, not the Libertarian Party, I value my liberty and yours.
GaryWitt comments on Aug 4, 2019:
The non-aggression principal is of course key here. Ultimately the question is, “At what point does a state (even a democratic state) begin to impinge upon the personal liberty of its citizens in an unacceptable manner or degree?” But that leads to other questions as well. How best to limit the growth of government? What is the acceptable role of government in our daily lives? Clearly the US Constitution is the best known device (if you will) to limit government. But its effectiveness depends to a large extent on mutual agreement. The consent of the governed. And that in turn depends on an educated populace, dedicated to reason and critical thinking. Has the public education system in the US achieved that? I would say no. Hence I worry that the creeping growth of government and the erosion of liberty will continue apace.
