@dd54 Actually, many homeschooling parents do cooperate a lot. For example, a homeschooling mother in our area was an art major in college and offered art classes for other homeschoolers. One homeschooling father was particularly good at science and had a lot of science in his college work, so he taught science and physics for junior high and high school skids. Other examples could be given, but these should suffice. The homeschooling community is a helpful community that tends to band together to offer help and advice and the best possible education they can offer their children.

KeithThroop comments on Jan 22, 2021:
Yes, for most people about most things, but it isn't easy. It begins with a recognition of one's own presuppositions and a willingness to challenge those presuppositions, as well as a recognition of the limits of one's own knowledge and experience. This is a very difficult process for anyone.
KeithThroop replies on Jan 22, 2021:
@Naomi I think you are essentially correct here: > Your frame of mind is your collection of thoughts and beliefs based on your experience and it shapes your thinking process. I would add, however, that a number of foundational presuppositions that we have really don't come from experience, at least not as we usually think of it. That is, I don't think we reason *to* them but rather that we reason *from* them and simply assume them without even realizing that we are doing it. For example, we all assume the existence of other minds. We all assume that we can perceive what other minds are thinking, at least to some extent -- an extent which makes living together at all possible -- via communication with others. We all assume that language is an adequate vehicle for such communication, despite our difficulties with it at times. We all also assume the basic laws of logic, even if we at times violate them. These are just a few things that we all seem to have hardwired into us. Or so it seems to me. At any rate, when any of us set off on a journey of self-evaluation, in which we seek to challenge our previously held beliefs and hold them up to scrutiny, we don't typically begin by questioning such basic assumptions. Rather we typically start from them. So, there are some presuppositions that are properly basic, as I think a philosopher like Alvin Plantinga would put it, and others which are not and which people feel more free to question. Just some of my own thinking out loud. You've asked a thoughtful question and offered some thoughtful suggestions.
Is mindset something you can consciously self-assess and reset accordingly?

In fact, I teach a graduate course in Biblical Hermeneutics. So, yes, I am quite aware that words can have multiple meanings. This recognition actually formed part of the case I was making. No, I didn't miss Chuck's overall point, nor his emphasis on the Messianic application, with which I agreed. I just didn't talk about it because it was not directly germane to the issue I was raising. At any rate, I don't think there is any point in continuing the conversation because we are clearly talking past one another. KeithThroop replies on Jan 19, 2021:
@eschatologyguy I don't know what you are citing there, but I assure you I am very well acquainted with the best lexical works, and they all essentially agree with Zodhiates' understanding as cited above. These works would include, for example, *A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament* (Brown, Driver, and Briggs), *Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament* (Archer and Harris), and *Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament* (Koehler and Baumgartner). I could also include numerous exegetical commentaries that focus on the meaning of the Hebrew text. My point is that I'm hardly alone in my understanding of the Hebrew word here. What I'm saying is pretty much the standard view among Biblical scholars so far as I can tell. > It does mean dig, as you say. But it also does mean open. Right. That is the metaphorical meaning I was talking about. The verb is being used figuratively to describe opening the ears *so that someone may hear*. This is the correct meaning in this instance, which is reflected not only in the KJV, but also in the CSB, ESV, NASB, and NKJV, to name but a handful of versions that reflect this understanding, the understanding for which I argued above. The original NIV actually appeared to agree with Chuck's view when it rendered the clause in verse 6, "but my ears you have pierced." However, it corrected this in a subsequent revision and rendered the clause, "but my ears you have opened." At any rate, the view that it alludes to the practice of piercing the ear of a slave as in Exod. 21:6 and Deut. 15:17 -- the view put forth by Chuck -- is incorrect. I fully understand, by the way, the meaning of the ceremony described in Exodus 21 and Deuteronomy 15:17. I just don't see any reason to understand Psalm 40:6 as alluding to it, and I don't think that this is the meaning any of the aforementioned versions see here either. By the way, I am not trying to be offensive or to attack Chuck personally. I really don't know much about him. And I am not trying to undermine the main thrust of his teaching in the video, which I found sound and encouraging (as I indicated above). I just think he has made a mistake here on this particular linguistic point, that's all.

@Mechanic True, but typically they seek to pardon people whom they suspect have been unjustly convicted, or who have been the victims of a miscarriage of justice such as an unequal application of the law, or who they deem to have fulfilled their responsibility for their crimes and shown evidence of reform. To be sure, this is not always the case, but it has historically been the approach as I have understood it. And, yes, presidents of both parties have done it. But in none of these cases are innocent people deliberately treated as guilty by a president. Yet that is what has happened to the aforementioned people blockaded in their hotel and not allowed to leave. It is one thing to show mercy to those convicted of a crime, something which our Constitution allows; it is another thing entirely to treat the innocent as though they are guilty, something which our Constitution does not allow.

KeithThroop replies on Jan 8, 2021:
@MichelleD No, he hasn't really answered my arguments, because I have not claimed to follow the law of Moses, a portion of which he cited (Deut. 17:14-20). He has either not read or not understood the case I presented in the article, in which I argued from the New Testament and made it clear that the Old Testament law does not, in fact, apply to Christians in the same way that it did to the nation of Israel. So, merely citing the Old Testament law as though it does apply to us in the same way does not address the issue at all. He would have to demonstrate why it must apply as he thinks it does, over against the reasons I gave for stating that it does not, a point in defense of which I could offer further argumentation if need be. Perhaps this article -- entitled "The Lawful Use of the Old Testament Law" -- would be helpful in this regard: https://reformedbaptistblog.com/2021/01/05/the-lawful-use-of-the-old-testament-law-1-timothy-18/ I agree, by the way, that the choice is ultimately whether we will follow God's word as our ultimate authority rather than man's laws. That is the whole point of my article, in which I look to the Bible as my ultimate authority rather than to English common law or any other merely man-made law.

KeithThroop replies on Jan 8, 2021:
@govols Yes, you did say a "tad." My response was not as nuanced as it should have been. I would agree that we should not only consider the context in which the biblical text should be understood -- the context in which it was written -- but also the context to which we are applying its teachings. But we must not confuse the difference between the accurate exegesis of the text as the authority for the believers on the one hand and the application of the text to the lives of believers on the other hand. For orthodox, Bible believing Christians, the issue is one of authority, and your suggestion seems to all too easily subvert the authority of the Bible in the life of the believer by importing the assumptions of English law and forcing the Bible to be read in light of them. At any rate, I repeat my point that the article was not about English law but about what the Bible says, and I hope you can see more clearly why that was my focus.

KeithThroop replies on Jan 8, 2021:
As I see it, your arguments are largely beside the point, since the issue under discussion in my article has to do with the *Biblical* view of the matter. As for you only Biblical reference, the passage in Deuteronomy, it does not really pertain to the issue either, for, as I pointed out in my article: > Can we really apply such cases in the history of national Israel to the Church? I think not. I think this would fail to properly take into account the differences between the nature of the Old Covenant people of God as a nation among nations and the New Covenant people of God as a family of believers from among all nations. Under the Old Covenant the very nature of the case often required rebellion against foreign oppressors or the overthrow of wicked kings, and then only with Divine sanction and guidance. But the New Covenant Church is not such an entity. As Jesus said to Pontius Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here” (John 18:36 NKJ). The issue under discussion is about how the Bible as a whole addresses the issue for the Christians, keeping in mind the principle of progressive revelation, in which we recognize that the Old Covenant has been abrogated, and we are now under the New Covenant. So, your points don't really affect my arguments at all. In fact, you actually avoid responding to my arguments directly.

Yes, they have the right to say such things, but we also have the right to respond about the danger of what they are saying. That is what I intend to keep doing. As you usual, @TheMiddleWay, you make points that get me thinking. It seems to me that the issue is not simply *change,* but rather the *kind* of change that is happening. But, you also mention a separate but related issue, which is the *speed* of the change that is happening. I think it is the *kind* of change that is most disturbing to conservatives, most notably change that is undermining a previous moral consensus to which they still hold. However, I do also think that the *speed* of change may bother conservative people, who tend to be concerned that we are experiencing change too quickly to properly assimilate it or gauge its true effects. That is, sometimes we too quickly embrace some changes without thinking more clearly about what the outcomes might be, especially in terms of ethical issues. Examples of such issues are probably mostly technological in nature and would include such things as embryonic stem cell research or cloning. The speed at which technology is advancing often seems to occur without due consideration of whether we *ought* to do something simply because we *can* do it.
