KeithThroop replies on Oct 6, 2020:
@Krunoslav @DaveO276 Yes, it seems to me that there was a kind of Civic Religion that most American's embraced, joining belief in the kind of God that comes from what had been called the "Judeo-Christian" worldview with civic responsibility and patriotism. Most of our founding fathers were either professing Christians of one sort or another, or Deists who shared the same basic worldview, and they saw their belief in a divine Creator, as well as human beings as being created in His image, as essential to their experiment in developing a constitutional republic. Vestiges of this Civic Religion remain, with our government institutions still commonly having chaplains and beginning sessions with prayer, as well as with numerous civic organizations that remain. I'm in two such organizations, for example, both of which are veterans organizations -- the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion -- and both of these organizations, which are Congressionally chartered, have at their core the concept of allegiance to God and country, with chaplains and at least two or three prayers at every meeting. To give you an idea, here is the preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion, which we recite in unison at each meeting: "FOR GOD AND COUNTRY WE ASSOCIATE OURSELVES TOGETHER FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES: To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; To maintain law and order; To foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; To preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in all wars; To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; To make right the master of might; To promote peace and goodwill on earth; To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness." The reference to "one hundred percent Americanism" was intended to reflect the point of view of Theodore Roosevelt, which I once posted about here: https://idw.community/group/Nationalism/discussion/111733/one-hundred-percent-americanism-theodore-roosevelt-famously-said-that-there-can-be-no-fif At any rate, there are still groups like this around. We definitely feel as though we've been fighting a losing battle of late, but we haven't given up.

@KanjaG I hope so. We tried to give them a well-rounded education, and we exposed them to ideas from different points of view while explaining why we disagreed. So, for example, while we are Creationists (old or young earth doesn't much matter to us), we required them to learn about Evolution and to read things in defense of it. We tried also to prepare them for the different points of view they would experience in college, should they choose to go. Our son, who is our oldest, chose to go to a state university that had a good business school, and he graduated with two bachelors degrees, one in business administration and one in business advertising. He is doing very well now in his career. Our oldest daughter chose to go to nursing school at a Catholic college, but soon after beginning her career in nursing, she and her husband decided to have children, and she decided to be a homemaker. She is going to be homeschooling her children as well. Our youngest daughter didn't want to go to college, and decided to work at a dude ranch in Colorado for a few summers, after which she started working for a local startup company, which she really enjoys and is looking forward to her career growing with the company. All three of my children are conservative and Christian (thankfully, from my point of view) and doing very well. We made sure to give them lots of opportunities to interact with other families and children in the community, mainly through things like 4H and sports like baseball and softball leagues and, in the case of our girls, lots of dancing classes and performances (which they loved to do.) I bring up our experience with them to show that homeschooling can be a great way to educate and prepare one's children to face the world and be successful (with heavy doses of prayer and the grace of God, of course!).

KeithThroop replies on Oct 6, 2020:
The term "evangelical" has become so elastic these days that it has been stretched to include just about anything. No one who understands what the term "evangelical" has meant historically would ever claim that one of them could vote for a pro-choice candidate. Historically evangelicals have held, for example, to the notion that Scripture is the final authority for the Christian in all matters of faith and practice, and the pro-choice position of Biden is widely -- and correctly -- understood to be in direct contradiction to Scriptural teaching. Anyway, those who claim to be "evangelical" and "pro-life," yet can vote for a rabid pro-choice candidate such as Biden, cannot possibly understand what either, or perhaps both, of those terms really mean. @Boardwine got it right in his comments above, I think.

I agree with this perspective, with one minor caveat -- if a spy agency is going to try to embed agents in, say, a middle eastern community, then they are going to have to find people that can pass for that ethnic community in appearance. Our spy agencies have often tried to recruit assets from within such communities, but sometimes that may not be possible. As I said, I think this is a minor caveat, since I doubt that this necessity would account for more than a very small percentage of hires.

KeithThroop replies on Oct 5, 2020:
@TheMiddleWay The issue for me hasn't been that I don't think I can control my actions or words; it's that I cannot control the actions or words of other people. For example, as a pastor, I have often had to offer counsel to women about very private matters in their lives. In such situations an intimacy may develop that can be easily misconstrued, and it is in situations like this that some pastors have been tempted to enter into affairs in the past. I decided that could never happen if I never even allowed the possibility for it, however remote I think it might be. I love my wife, so I protect our marriage in any and every way I can. Also, if people know you are consistently meeting in private with a woman who is not your wife, they may easily jump to the wrong conclusions. Thankfully, I have a wife who is wise and trustworthy, and I have made it my practice to counsel women together with her (and her insights are also very valuable, of course). This practice helps to prevent those issues mentioned. If a woman would prefer not to meet with both my wife and I for counseling, then I would refer her to someone else. So far I think that has only happened one time, though, if memory serves. Anyway, I thought a little more detail might help explain why such a practice is taken by guys like Pence and me. By the way, I met my beloved in the fall of 1985 in Haifa, Israel, and we were married in the fall of 1986 in Illinois, USA. This November, I am happy to say, will be 34 years of marriage for us, and I love her more each and every day. :)

KeithThroop replies on Oct 4, 2020:
Mainly during the Clinton years our Navy was decimated. For example, a relatively new class of destroyers at the time, some 30 Spruance class destroyers, were decommissioned and destroyed (except for one, I think, which was kept around for testing). I served on one of these in the 1980's, the USS Caron. Our shrinking navy is one reason that China has been getting away with so much in the South China Sea, for example -- that and a weak presidency under Obama, in particular (or so it seems to me). The following page shows U.S. Ship force levels from 1886-Present: https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/us-ship-force-levels.html However, there may be some good news on the horizon: https://www.defensenews.com/naval/2020/09/24/the-pentagon-is-eyeing-a-500-ship-navy-documents-reveal/

I think that the more rural and/or eastern parts of these northwestern states (i.e. Washington, Oregon, northern California) are already more conservative. It is the large urban areas on the coasts that are so liberal, but they also make up the large majority of the population, which means they dominate the politics. The situation is similar to that of Illinois, where I live. Most of the central and southern parts of the state are more conservative, but the majority of the population is in Chicago/Cook County and is liberal, and they dominate the state politics. The rest of us feel pretty much like we have no voice, but we keep trying.

KeithThroop replies on Oct 1, 2020:
@TheMiddleWay Actually, Wallace was different in the Trump-Clinton debate. First, his opening questions were the same to both and did not come with accusations preceding them. Also, when the "open discussion" part began, Clinton did not interrupt Trump as Biden did (with Wallace looking on and saying nothing), and Wallace didn't interrupt Trump right off the bat, cutting him off in mid sentence, as he did the other night. So, Wallace did do things quite differently in that debate versus the most recent one. He wasn't attacking and aggressive then as he was in the recent debate. In fact, as I just watched the first portion of that first debate, he was much more polite and respectful, but he was actually aggressive and combative from the start in this recent debate. So, no, it seems to me that President Trump did not get what he had bargained for the second time around. Could he have responded better? Perhaps. But Wallace was definitely different in approach and tone, and he made it clear from the start in this recent debate that he was against the President in a way that he did not do in the first debate. That's the way I see it.
What did you learn from the first "presidential" debates?

KeithThroop replies on Oct 1, 2020:
I saw that as well, but then I wondered, why did Wallace himself interrupt the President, who was already dominating this portion, and after the Biden interruptions, to announce that they were beginning the open discussion portion and then to say to Biden, "Go ahead Mr. Vice President." He interrupted the President in order to make the announcement that didn't apparently need to be made, only to offer Biden an opportunity to take control. And then, of course, he went on to do the other things I mentioned above. At any rate, Biden wasn't exactly polite offering his interruptions while the President was speaking, but that is fine if that was expected. People just shouldn't say that the interruptions started with Trump, then, as so many have (and, I noticed to your credit, that you haven't said). At any rate, I think Wallace was the biggest problem. He signaled early that he was going after the President as though he were the opposition, and he chose his moments to interrupt and interject himself, for no apparent reason, early in the debate, not while Biden was speaking but while the President was speaking. I think Wallace, with his years of experience, knew exactly what he was doing, by the way, and it wasn't good.

KeithThroop replies on Sep 29, 2020:
@Krunoslav I have always found your input worthy of consideration, and you've brought up many valid points here. As for me, I don't think that America has yet irrevocably lost those things that have made it exceptional in some ways. You mentioned the need to fight for it this time, because this time it won't come easy, but I would remind you that it didn't come easy the first time around either. A small group of colonies fought against the largest empire and arguably the greatest army in the world at that time and, with some much-needed help especially from France in the end, they were victorious. To be sure, a lot of things had to go their way, and there certainly were cultural factors that provided the right incubator for the great American experiment, but it was by no means easy. I think we need to look back to them for inspiration now and learn from what they did right, just as we need to learn from their mistakes so that we never make them again.

How would you explain the term American Exceptionalism?
KeithThroop replies on Sep 29, 2020:
That is a good question. The term seems to be used by people in many different ways, but I think most of the conservatives who use the term do so as an expression of nationalism and pride in those things at which America has excelled in its relatively short history as a sovereign nation, things such as our Constitutional Republic and the freedoms it guaranteed, the many areas of industrial and technological progress achieved by our citizens, the role the country played in helping to end two world wars (both of which they entered too late, in my own humble opinion), etc. Thought of this way, many other countries could speak of their own exceptionalism, since many other countries (perhaps most) have in some way offered something to the world that is unique and valuable and has helped to shape the world for the better. Anyway, just a few thoughts about a term that I have never really used myself, although I understand why people would use it, and I have no serious problem with it.

As for Augustine and Aquinas, in my view the former resisted the influence of the philosophy of his time a lot more than the latter did. As I recall, Aquinas essentially set out to wed Christian theology with Aristotelian categories, and in some ways it was a big mistake. At any rate, the history of theological thought in the West is certainly interlaced with the history of philosophy.

Here is the main section of the text: "[[For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men]], who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-- and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. 24 [[Therefore God also gave them up]] to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason [[God gave them up to vile passions]]. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, [[God gave them over to a debased mind]], to do those things which are not fitting ...." (Rom. 1:18-28 NKJ) I have set of in double brackets -- [[...]] -- some key statements highlighting the point. After opening this section with the statement that "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven" (vs. 18), Paul then describes the descent into sin due to rejection of God, along with God's response to it. He says that "therefore God gave them up" (vs. 24), "God gave them up to vile passions" (vs. 26), and "God gave them over to a debased mind" (vs. 28). So, they wanted life without God, and in His judgment He gave them what they wanted, which will lead to even more wrath of God on the future day of judgment. As Paul will go on to say in the next chapter: "But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who 'will render to each one according to his deeds....'"(Rom. 2:5-6 NKJ) A reading of this ...
