WOW... your system is so bad... time to fix the system and hold a new election if you really want to be fair.
KeithThroop replies on Nov 17, 2020:
@Lightman Actually, the Supreme Court won't be deciding the election outcome. They will be deciding about the legality or illegality of votes cast in certain states, or perhaps in certain counties within certain states. Legally cast votes will decide the outcome, one way or the other. I would also point out that this is a very large country, with around 330, 600, 000 people in 50 states and numerous U.S. possessions. I see from your profile that you are from Australia, which I believe has a population of about 25-26 million, which would make it roughly comparable to a few of our larger states which had no real issues in this election. To be sure, what we are seeing now in a handful of states is a real problem, but changing the whole system wouldn't necessarily stop it from happening again anyway. Where you have people (mostly from one party, it seems) that are willing to break the law in order to win, they will keep trying in the future. All we can do is correct the issues as they arise, making it harder to cheat. But this highlights the real problem, which has more to do with the shifts in our culture than with the system of government we have. At any rate, no country that allows its citizens to vote will ever be perfect. All we can do is seek to make the system we have, which has served us so well for so long, work up to its fullest potential as best we can. In our case, we need to begin to win the larger culture war if we want to save what we have.

KeithThroop replies on Nov 17, 2020:
@Lightman I could. But it will require that the system actually work, and part of that system has to do with the Courts. I think it is way too early to give up on it just because there are a handful of states that need to be brought into line. I'm willing to wait and see before I throw in the towel.

KeithThroop replies on Nov 17, 2020:
@Lightman I see no need for such a move. The system as it is has worked well enough for a long time now. Besides, I doubt seriously that there will be the will to amend the U.S. Constitution to do such a thing. As it stands now, we have a judicial system that may well force the corrections needed in those states that have been a problem.

Howdy @jaymaron, I thought the end was neigh when the Cubs won the Pennant after a 71 year drought.
KeithThroop replies on Nov 17, 2020:
Actually, after winning back-to-back World Series in 1907 and 1908, the Cubs didn't win the World Series again until 2016. So, there was a 71 year National League pennant drought, as you've correctly said, but a 108 year World Series drought. I'm a cubs fan living in central Illinois, where about half of us root for the Chicago Cubs and the other half roots for the St. Louis Cardinals. The joke often told is: > What's the difference between a Cardinal fan and a Cub fan? > After a bad season the Cardinals fan says, "There's always next year!" But the Cub fan says, "There's always next century!" That pretty much says it all. :)

KeithThroop replies on Nov 12, 2020:
@Krunoslav As a pastor-teacher, both in churches and in a seminary in which I teach Biblical Hermeneutics, I am in partial agreement with you on your two points. On your first point about a teacher protecting a student from his own influence, I would say that my job as a pastor actually is to influence those I teach, at least to some degree, not only by teaching them the truth but also by modeling as best I can its application in everyday life. However, I do so with a constant emphasis upon the fact that it is not I whom they should ultimately seek to emulate; it is the Lord Jesus Christ whom they should seek to emulate. My example is only to be followed insofar as it follows His example of truthfulness, humility, love, etc. I also constantly affirm that for Christians the Bible is our ultimate authority in all matters of faith and practice and that they must measure everything I say and do by that standard, accepting only what adheres to it and rejecting anything that does not. They must be good "Bereans," which is a metaphor reflecting this Biblical text: > Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (Acts 17:10-11 NKJ) So, I agree to some degree with the first point, but not completely. As a pastor-teacher I am also in partial agreement with your second point about a teacher making himself progressively unnecessary. Although there is a sense in which the goal should be to help those we teach come to a point where they no longer need us, as pastors we actually continue to learn and grow and thus keep having more and more to teach and model for the good of our hearers. Or at least that is what should be happening. Anyway, my situation is somewhat unique as a pastor, but I thought you might appreciate hearing it.

Tell me who has the majority in the house and I will prophesy the outcome with certainty!
KeithThroop replies on Nov 10, 2020:
Well, if you mean that you will prophesy the outcome of the Presidential election with certainty based on which party -- Republican or Democrat -- has the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, if the election should need to be decided there, I would remind in this case that the votes are determined not by the total number of Representatives but by the number of states controlled by particular party. As I understand it, each state would get to cast one vote, and that state's vote would be determined by which party has the most representatives from that state. > Under the Constitution's 12th Amendment, the House would select the next president and the Senate would pick the vice president if no candidate has a majority of Electoral College votes. > By law, states have until Dec. 8 to certify their results or have the state legislature appoint electors to the Electoral College, which is set to convene on Dec. 14. Congress is set to formally count electors' votes and declare a winner on Jan. 6. > In the scenario of a tie, each state would only have a single vote in the House of Representatives. The party with more House seats would determine the presidential vote. > Republicans control 26 state delegations, while Democrats hold 23. Pennsylvania is split between both parties, and Republicans also have a chance to break even with Democrats in Michigan and Minnesota if they capture one additional seat in each state. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/house-decide-president/story?id=73640149 So, President Trump would win. I'm sure that the Democrats, therefore, do not want to let it get to that.

For example, if His intention was to save these children and bring them to heaven without their having to endure the lives their parents were bringing them into, then He may have been showing them a tremendous mercy. They were all going to die -- and that because they were sinners -- but perhaps He saw to it that they died early for a gracious purpose. Again, this is only conjecture, but it is possible given the aforementioned principles. Second, Scripture indicates that Jesus was born without sin because He was conceived miraculously through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is implied in the prophetic announcement of Jesus’ birth by the angel Gabriel. Recall again Luke’s account of his pronouncement to Mary: > NKJ Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that *Holy One* who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” The ESV translates this verse a bit differently: > ESV Luke 1:35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born *will be called holy* — the Son of God.” (Italics mine.) Whichever way it is translated, this statement by Gabriel informs us that, because he was born of a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was *holy*. That this holiness was more than just being set apart as one who was special to God, but that it included a moral holiness or perfection, is clear from the fact that He was also going to be the very *Son of God*, who could be nothing but morally perfect. It is also clear from what the rest of the Scriptures tell us about Christ. For example: > NKJ 2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Here the Apostle Paul connects Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins to His own sinlessness. In fact, the Scriptures teach that Jesus’ sinlessness is why He can be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. As the Apostle Peter wrote, for example: > NKJ 1 Peter 1:18-19 … knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Anyway, I hope I have been able to adequately answer your questions from a Christian perspective as you ...

@2FollowHim Although I would guess he has a basically solid Biblical worldview, I certainly wouldn't look to him for guidance on the doctrines of salvation, for example. But I am keeping separate in my mind his theological perspective from geopolitical perspective. To be sure, one would inform the other, but many professing Christians would disagree about a number of geopolitical issues he mentions. As for me, I'm still not too sure what to make of his perspective there, but he has certainly given me a lot to think about.

KeithThroop replies on Oct 31, 2020:
@2FollowHim I don't think we are going to see eye to eye about the nature of President Trump's comments, but we can agree to disagree in mutual love and respect as brothers in Christ. :) As for the meaning of Romans 8:28, I think you are misunderstanding the grammar here. The Greek word translated "all things" (πάντα, *pánta*) in the New King James Version that I cited is a neuter plural that really does mean "all *things*." The Greek verb translated "work together" (συνεργεῖ, *sunergeî*) in the same version requires a third-person subject, which could here be either God, as you have suggested, or the "things" mentioned, but either way the context would still imply that it is God who is actually doing it. Thus, some versions agree with you about the subject of the verb being best understood as God while disagreeing with you about the translation of *pánta*, which they correctly take to mean *all things*, since the Greek term really cannot be understood any other way. Here is a brief list of versions demonstrating these points: > CSB Romans 8:28 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. > ESV Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. > KJV Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. > NASB Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. > NET Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose, > NIV Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. > NKJ Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. I hope this helps to clear things up a bit. In every case, no matter which way these versions understand the subject of the verb *sunergeî*, the context would require that God is ultimately behind all things working together for our good as Christians.

KeithThroop replies on Oct 30, 2020:
@2FollowHim First, I watched the video before my first comment, but I watched it again now, as you have suggested. Yet, I don't think I saw what you saw. I guess it depends upon what you mean when you say that he "confess[ed] Jesus Christ in front of everyone." What I saw was his saying that Jesus Christ is more popular than him -- as statement of fact -- and that he wanted to say it looking up to heaven because He didn't want to "take any chances." This is certainly insufficient to be deemed a confession of saving faith in Jesus Christ, if that is how you are understanding it. Second, no, my view does not entail what you've said. Although I believe that God rules as sovereign over all things, I also believe that He sovereignly ordains to work through secondary causes to bring about His will. These would include our actions and prayers. How such things work out is ultimately a mystery to us. We are called upon to be faithful and obedient servants of God, knowing that, because He is sovereign over all things, "all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Rom. 8:28 NKJ).

@jasonc65 I will seek to clarify my last comment with the hopes that we might get somewhere here, but also in the hopes that others reading this might somehow benefit. After, in my educated opinion, you mischaracterized the teaching of the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats, I sought to correct that characterization and invited dialog about it, yes. I even sought to clarify an important term -- *patriotism* -- and to point out one aspect of agreement we might share, depending upon how you were understanding it. Your response was not to offer any valid counter as to the meaning of the parable, but rather to engage in *ad hominem* attack. I said you did not understand the parable, and you clearly don't. That was not a personal attack in which I sought to question your character, yet you chose to say the following about me and those who share my theological perspective: > I also see that you are a Reformed Baptist. Reformed Baphomets are kkkalvinists. Kkkalvinists are trained marxists. They have read Rules for Radicals. Kkkalvinism is a racist doctrine that treats some people as untouchables. Dulles was a racist kkkalvinist, as was Woodrow. That is nothing but *ad hominem* attack with no basis at all. That is why I said that I saw no point in further conversation about the issue. By the way, I am a U.S. veteran who promotes traditional concepts of American patriotism and nationalism, as my past posts in this community demonstrate quite clearly. I just don't think we should read these ideas back into the Bible. Also, I didn't imply in the least that I disagree with the idea that "IDW is for everyone." I didn't say you should not be able to post such things as your initial post here. However, if you are going to post such things in a forum such as this, I would think you would expect some counterarguments. In fact, I thought that was one reason this forum existed. If you felt I was "talking down" to you from the standpoint of my "religion," I think you are again mistaken. I said you are wrong about the meaning of the aforementioned parable, and I gave some contextual indications as to why. I even provided a link to a blog post I wrote that defends my interpretation in some significant detail. Although there is still much I have to learn about the Bible, it might help you to know that I have spent my entire adult life studying and teaching it, I have two degrees in Biblical studies, and I teach a graduate course in Biblical Hermeneutics as well. So, while I certainly make no claims to infallibility, I think it is safe to say that I have a pretty good idea what I am talking about. I at least know enough to tell you that you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to this parable. You are misreading it by ignoring the context in which it was...

Frankly, I prefer translations that opt for the formal equivalence approach, such as the New American Standard Bible, the New King James Version, or the English Standard Version. As I recall, the late textual critic, Bruce Metzger, put forth the maxim, "Literal as possible, free as necessary," when translating, and I think that is pretty good. That is what these translations seem to shoot for. As for the text I cited above, it is Hebrew poetry, and it is obviously speaking figuratively, using the right hand (which was typically the dominant hand, as you have said) as a metaphor for the correct direction to go. My daughter and I just found some humor in the way the ESV rendering sounded to our ears in this current environment, with which it obviously has nothing to do.
