Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Good... and bad... advice here. The skilled-up atheist is aware of the ''Ask Questions To Destabilise The Atheistic Platform'' tactic. They know they've got a Christian in the room, and they are the modern-day equivalent of the Romans' lions in the arena. They'll relish the opportunity a Questioner is providing. They have some very devious 'outs' to make it LOOK like they're answering (with all the smug veneer of civility, but really only pretending to respect your question) but really they are deflecting... all the while waiting for you to slip up so they can move in for the kill.*
[An example of how they play it out: *''Yes... I've encountered that question before - it's the sort of thing that someone who is insufficiently versed in ancient X, Y, Z (insert specific arcane area of Archaeology / Paleontology / Geology / History / Latin / Greek / Hebrew/ etc) usually asks. Well, here's the answer; As the most recent findings of top experts has shown us, the (Christian ) claim of (whatever) has been proven to be totally unfounded.'']
Then they'll throw a question right back at you - with a phrase that such a question is all in the spirit of honest debate. I'll guarantee you, their question will be a doozy - and NOT one that you could ever be prepared for. It WON'T be ''Are you a Christian?'' The advised ''I'm here to learn from you'' is close to an admission of inability to engage in vigorous discourse / debate and looks like a weasel's attempt to sneak one's way out of what one stumbled into by asking a loaded question in the first place.
In short, I wouldn't advise engaging with an atheist professor. Many of them are egomaniacs, and that sort are vicious - and all of them have their reputation and tenure on the line. They aren't set to be outdone by some over-enthusiastic Christian.
Don't poke the lions: they're professional apex predators and they'll take an unwary Christian for breakfast.

Yes, atheists tend always to try to put the believer on the defensive without having to offer evidence for any of their assertions, but we should not fall for that tactic. We should not shy away from answering questions, but we should also not let them get away from having to answer ours. My own practice is not to engage with any atheists who refuse to answer my questions and thus refuse to engage in a genuine dialog.

You make a profound point.
The audience is more important than the orchestra. Nobody will come to your concert if you don't go to other people's concerts.
Everyone is trying to be the best orchestra. Real power rests with the audience. Be the most sensitive audience. Be the audience that everyone wants to play for. Then you have the power to decide who gets to be on the stage.
@jaymaron Sadly, there is a growing number of these tenured "orchestras" who have a malign attitude particularly for the Christian faith and would use their position of authority to abuse their students with public insults. My own daughter was a victim of one. Told her not to engage and instead pray for him. They should pick, as it were, somebody their own "size."
