Have you ever come across Luke 17:6? This would have been the scenario if the 1st century rabbis had not rejected the Messiah. Yeshua was not remiss in teaching them what they needed to know.
"And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you."
It's almost the same as Matt 17:20 about the mountain being thrown into the sea. But what does mountain mean? A literal mountain? Or a Middle Eastern figure of speech? If you watched Achmadinajad's speech at the UN when he was still president of Iran, you must have heard him say something strange: "We will rise over all the mountains." Surely he didn't mean mount Everest? "Mountains" in Middle Eastern parlance means nations. "They scattered over the mountains" really means they scattered over many nations, which was what happened. What Jesus was referring to in Matt 17:20 was Israel's Roman occupiers. Had the Jewish nation received Him then, that would have been the logical next step.
Going back to Luke 17:6, what does the sycamine tree stand for? The sycamine tree is also known as the sycamine fig tree, a fig tree lookalike. We know that during the Lord's first advent, Israel was under the vassal rule of the Herodians, who were Edomites. Being the descendants of Jacob's twin brother Esau, they could be seen as a fig lookalike, as the fig was the symbol of political Israel. So same as mountain, the sycamine was also symbolical of another form of oppressive rule over the nation of Israel that could have been removed.
