I have a pet theory with regard to this Psalm 83 conflict. Nothing dogmatic, just a "war game" scenario floating in my head.
We know that Shi'a Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia hate each other's guts almost as much as they hate Israel, and that both have gone into proxy wars against each other. That is the background.
When this Psalm 83 conflict starts, we read in Obadiah 1:7 that Israel will be prevailed against. Now what would go around in the minds of the Iranian Mullahs? "We cannot allow the Saudis to take the glory of defeating Israel! That glory belongs to us!" So they NUKE Saudi Arabia from their launch pads in Syria, conceivably from Damascus. This allows the Israelis to wriggle free from the Psalm 83 noose.
It is not clear who causes it, but in Isaiah 17:3-4 it says:
"The fortress also shall CEASE from Ephraim (takes a hit?), and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts. And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean."
It's a more likely scenario that Israel strikes back - not conventionally, as we read it has already been weakened. There are verses that talk about Elam (the more ancient name of Persia) laying siege to and destroying Edom (Arabia), rendering it uninhabitable (Isaiah 21:2), and Damascus being destroyed "in an hour" and also rendering it uninhabitable (Isaiah 17:1).
Again, nothing dogmatic. Just a pet theory. It could come out as something totally different.
